Stockton Poll Shows Trump Holding Lead in South Jersey

A few weeks ago the Stockton Polling Institute issued a statewide poll that showed Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in New Jersey by six points. And that was before the final two presidential debates and the release of the controversial “Access Hollywood” video that showed Trump years ago bragging about sexually assaulting women and the subsequent stream of women claiming he had done that to them.

Maybe the Democrats are in good shape in New Jersey as a whole. But the GOP is holding its own in South Jersey, according to a new poll released by the Stockton Polling Institute on Tuesday.

Between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23, the SPI interviewed 625 likely voters from the 2nd Congressional District, which includes all of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties and parts of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Ocean counties, including all of Southern Ocean County except Barnegat Township and the western part of Stafford Township. Trump leads Clinton 45 to 42 percent, while 4 percent of the polled voters supported Libertarian Gary Johnson, 1 percent gave the nod to the Green Party’s Jill Stein, 3 percent said they weren’t supporting any of the four candidates, and another 3 percent said they were still undecided. Trump’s lead was within the poll’s plus-or-minus 3.9 percent margin of error.

If South Jersey was a state unto itself this would be a good thing. Unfortunately, the population is denser up north by NYC.

I think Trump will draw more black votes than any recent Republican. A lot of old truths aren’t true this year. Most polls are way off because their methodology applies to 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. The Bush, McCain, and Romney performances are not good models for this year’s Republican candidate. Neither is the Obama phenomenon a good model for Hillary. I believe New Jersey will be a surprise, as will Michigan and a few other states I can think of.

Not to be a downer but...the south part?

There’s nothing here.

Well, there IS Atlantic City. Boardwalk, Park Place, St. Charles Place, Illinois Avenue ...

From what I know, much of NYState is more Republican, but it’s NYCity that goes Democrat.
Just as larger city areas of NJ being more Democrat takes away from the rest of the state being more Republican - basically same in all of US, Dems take over a City and it starts making it hard for the rest of the state to go Republican in National campaigns.

Jersey is doable

Those blacks in Newark and the north are sick and tired of politics as usual. They hate Hillary, she is a do nothing talker and evaporates the moment she wins. Trump is talking about school choice, a big issue in Newark, the parents of Newark want this, but can’t have it because the NJEA and the Democrats won’t allow it. Why? Because it diverts large sums of cash out of the public NJEA/Democrat schools and puts that money to good use in charter or private schools. Can’t have that, plus those kids might learn something beyond democrats are good and republicans are racists.

That message is resonating with African American community, if it turns into votes for Trump, this makes New Jersey competitive. New Jersey is a sleeper swing state, it has the demographic Trump is winning with, fed up blacks, blue collar and gray collar workers. That is Trump’s base.

Plus Black Lives Matters, just closed the upper deck of the George Washington Bridge and created a major traffic jam. Those were NJ voters in that jam, and you don’t mess with a man’s commute, now he has to work extra hours tonight, get a verbal thrashing from his boss, make arrangements for someone to pick up his kids and won’t get home to around 11 pm tonight. So yes, if a Trump vote will restore law and order.... It is what is going through people’s minds right now.
