” I knew it was a landslide. I didn’t know why”
Guess he wasn’t the brightest 13 yr old. There was that little thing less than a year before called the Kennedy Assassination that gave the Democrats an enormous sympathy vote.
That, and LBJ ran a dirty campaign and the national press corp was in the tank for him.
I am older than Rush and I sure understood why!
My seventh birthday fell about two weeks after the 1964 election. I remember two things. First the LJB atomic bomb TV ad, and picking up the LA TImes outside the house the day after with the landslide headline across the top.
I was out there for Goldwater, even though pretty young at the time. We were so excited after the convention. There were so many reasons that the country needed to move in a better direction than it was in 1964.
But at some point we sensed that our message was not resonating. Goldwater’s words were being twisted. Our last thrill was Ronald Reagan’s speech a few days before the election. But even at the end of that election, we didn’t hear that the Republican establishment had thrown in the towel.
This is the FIRST election we’ve seen where so many high-ranking GOP leaders have said openly that they expect to lose. Even in 1996, our leaders knew it was starting to sag for Dole/Kemp, and they did not voice it. They still held out hope, at least in public statements.
What Rush is saying is that we’ve never been through a cycle where our own people announced a loss weeks ahead of the election. Not for Goldwater, not for Dole, or any other candidate. So are they seeing things we aren’t seeing and running for the tall grass, or do they just want Trump to lose and hoping for a loss?
