For more than two hours on Friday morning, much of the web seemed to grind to a haltor at least slow to dial-up speedfor many users in the United States.
More than a dozen major websites experienced outages and other technical problems, according to user reports and the web-tracking site downdetector.com. They included The New York Times, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, GitHub, Etsy, Tumblr, Spotify, PayPal, Verizon, Comcast, EA, the Playstation network, and others.
How was it possible to take down all those sites at once?

Shutting down twitter puts a major damper on Trump communicating directly with the voters.
I just tried several of those and they work for me:
paypay.com
netflix.com
nhl.com
intercom.com
reddit.com
spotify.com
It may depend on physical location. I have Cox cable out of Kansas.
You win the Internet for the day. Sorry it’s broken.

An insteresting site to watch some of the less sophisticated attacks happen...
Thanks for posting the thread. Some of the DNS stuff is hard to follow. NOT being able to connect to our business sites brings it down to my level of understanding.
NETFLIX just went down for me.
This is the work of Anonymous with the intent of proving that shutting down Assange won’t stop anything. Here in Kentucky everything is still working fine, including Twitter, where I am getting the info on Anonymous. Appears that the DDOS continues, though, for the east coast and now the west coast is getting hit. Also outages in Texas.
I can’t access ancestry.com. I feel as though someone’s cut off my oxygen.
really?
Just tried using several ip addresses for youtube after my bookmarks and links from FR failed. None worked.
Wouldn’t the direct ip adress bypass the DNS servers?
Bravo, JimRob!

You think its the dems?
I guess I wouldn’t put it passed them.
Every time I think it cannot get worse (or better) I am surprised.
Nor other gun site.
Don’t feel bad, I don’t get all this stuff, either ;)
Maybe we should all hand out our phone numbers? Lol.
This report was written several years ago, however it does discuss the inner workings of the web and the argument for governance. While many here understand ICANN, it’s all complicated for me. But, I do understand the concepts. Although this is lengthy, I hope it’s helpful.

Glad to hear the painters weren’t damaged permanently!
Here in north central WV using Suddenlink it’s a mess.
Even FR, which is normally very fast for me, is at speeds reminiscent of my days on WebTV.
Hi, AQ. Long time no type. Hope all is well.
