It is an affront to decency and sanity to even have this event. With what is on the line right now there is nothing served by playing “get along” at a publicity stunt event.
I understand everyone is supposed to get along at The Roast. In another era when the sides weren’t as completely opposed in worldviews it made sense.
Not today.
He only had 3 options:
1) Not go
2) Go and be a soft “get along”
3) Go in hard and hit hard and not worry about overdoing it.
He HAD to go to satisfy the tradition. Not going would have made him look bad. But to soften the blows just to “get along” for the night? How could he? If he went soft we’d all be sitting here wondering if his fire had gone out or if the system was getting to him.
So at this time I’d rather be hearing that he went a little too far. Anything else would just make him look like he is denying the urgency of this election for a laugh or that he has been putting us on and he doesn’t really think the situation in the country is as dire as we believe.
There is simply nothing at all about any of this that lends itself to overly lighthearted humor.
So rather than worry about whether he was gracious to the hosts perhaps instead wonder what the hosts expected by putting them both in the room under these conditions. They quite literally asked for it.
Agreed.
You’re right. Had he soft pedaled it, we’d all be livid and accusing him of going all squish.
Agree with you 100% and, as a Catholic, I think it’s time — well, long past time, actually — for the Al Smith dinner to jettison the tradition of showcasing politicians at this annual dinner.

“I understand everyone is supposed to get along at The Roast.”
The only thing that I find disturbing in all of this is that Catholics are supposed to get along with Hillary a few days after she spoke in favor of partial birth abortions of 9 month babies on national TV. Trump said nothing even mildly offensive.
Yeah, but all the media will report is that he broke with tradition and another news cycle will be spent on this crap instead of what really concerns Americans.
IOW, he didn't do a Romney impression.
“They quite literally asked for it.”
Long ago this event outlived its usefulness. It’s just another gathering of the “We’re OK. You are not.” crowd.
Trump jammed a finger in their collective eye. He was...wait for it...deplorable!
Exactly
