This guy is really trying to turn things upside down. Just a year or two ago, Philippine leaders were considering inviting US military forces back to the old US bases there. I wonder if Duterte will last long as their leader, what the people think?
We used to treat the Philippines quite well up until the end of the Vietnam war. Since then we’ve given them fairly short shrift. It’s not the way to win friends and influence people.

Amuk! Similar to “Amok” of Indonesia. Boy did those guys know how to party back in 1965. Get rid of the Communist Party of Indonesia under Aidit, some Indonesian leftists (never saw an accurate figure on this), and about a half a million ethnic Chinese, many of whom were probably innocent victims of an ethnic pogrom.
Also got rid of communist sympathizer and legend in his own mind Sukarno.
The other “Amok” is Star Trek’s “Amok Time” but that was about how horny Vulcans act when they go into “heat”. Just don’t get in their way.
My Filipino friends and relatives say Duterte is still popular due to his war on drugs and druggies. And many would rather bow to China than stand up to China, although I must say that few Filipinos seem to recognize that the resources involved could make a big difference in how the RP does economically. Nor do they, I think, recognize how they would fare as China’s dog, compared to being “America’s dog”, in the long run.
The Chinese have their own Muslim problem with 1 to 2% of their population being Muslim tribal groups. I can remember when we had a problem at Guantanamo because some Uyghurs were to be released, but China did not want them back or they were afraid to go back. Here are details on Muslims in China. Given the problems with China over islands and possible oil in the South China Sea, this could be a ploy of this ruler to placate the Chinese and gain concessions.

Okay, Mr. Duerte, but you’ll be sorry! Under President Xi Jinping, China is becoming more fully communist again. Obama is not going to continue his bumblings for much longer. There is a chance that you will have a real patriot (Trump) serving as leader of the free world.
Duerte, like Hussein did, has a population full of Males that are difficult in the EXTREME to control. So, for my opinion, I think his drug policy is spot on!
Historically, when 3rd world countries start leaning left it’s real purpose is to try and get more money out of Uncle Sam. Duerte may see that bluffing Trump will be like peeing into the wind!
