Two term limits on HOR and senators
I favor term limits, but two terms is too short for the House. Two terms for Senators is twelve years. That converts to a six term limit in the House, which strikes me as reasonable.
If you look at the House, the workhorses are the subcommittee chairmen, who have typically been around for at least three or four terms. They've been through the cycle a couple of times and have had time to build real expertise.
We will lose a lot of good, productive members in the prime or their careers even with a twelve year limit. The main point is to end the perception that service in Congress is a lifetime sinecure and a terminal job. Members should know that they will return to private life at a time certain, and generally before they retire. But they should have enough time to learn their jobs before we kick them out.
“Two term limits on HOR and senators”
I’m all for that, but let’s change the lengths of Senate and House terms to four years, with elections to be held at the midway point of presidential terms in office.
If that change is made, no congressional rep can hold office longer than eight years.
Offsetting their elections from presidential elections, also creates a necessary friction between the Legislative and Executive branches. It would tend to keep one party from seizing control of both of those branches during the same presidential cycle.
What do you have against HOR’s?
