The D.C. Council unanimously approved the name "State of Washington, D.C." in its push for statehood on Tuesday, rejecting the long-favored name of New Columbia.
However, instead of the D.C. standing for District of Columbia, it would refer to Douglass Commonwealth, in honor of Frederick Douglass

First, the District they drew up was too small. It should have been big enough to encompass the workforce (and hangers-on) of a modern super-power capital. Of course, how could they know?
Second, they should have made it clear: DC gets no representation in Congress and cannot vote for President!
DC is the District of Government. It is a conflict of interest for them to vote on the federal government!
My notion is that Maryland needs another county - Columbia County. Immediately, the main inhabitants of "Da City" will have a representation par with neighboring Maryland counties and residents.
One of the arguments I hear is that we have the ONLY capital in the developed world where the citizens have less rights than the rest of the country. They cannot even spend their own tax money if the national government gets shut down.
Let them resign and move out if they don't like their situation!

So? Give 'em home rule! Municipal budget and taxing authority. Cokehead mayor and what-not.
Just make it very clear, they don't rate a federal vote!
