Trump Calls for Constitutional Amendment to Set Term Limits For Congress

GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to push for a constitutional amendment setting term limits for members of both chambers of Congress.

Speaking to a crowd at a campaign rally in Colorado Springs, Trump spoke about his desire to “break the cycle of corruption” in Washington, D.C. if he elected president. The GOP nominee told the crowd it was time to “drain the swamp” of special interests. He recited portions of his newly unveiled ethics reform proposals and then told the crowd another major announcement which is part of his plan.

“If I am elected president, I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said, as the room erupted in cheers.

Love Trumps idea, but does anyone think Congress will vote on a coVVnstitutional amendment to limit themselves to the goose that laid the golden egg...?

That's why we need an Article V convention. Congress would have no say in any amendments produced by a Convention of the States.

*** “One bill at a time
NEA gone
Social Security gone
Medicare/socialized medicne (with open markets for insurance if still necessary)
Repeal of zippy-care
Repeal of any law that doesn’t pass a “Bill of Rights” test

Wish list.....” ***

I do love your list, mine is longer but probably illegal to mention in 57 States.

.
Everywhere term limits have been applied, the result has been more power for the crooks.

Term limits move politics left rapidly.

*** “Remember, the flat tax is still an income tax. In fact, it is a cancer cell waiting to metastacize. It always does without fail” ***

Exactly and that plan leaves the IRS in place.

I’m leaning towards State Sales Tax and The Fed suggests an amount due from each State via a Census, My Congress Critter would have much more on his plate than Re-Election.

Get the Fed out of the Food Stamp and Welfare Business as well. (vote buying schemes)

Social Security needs to be GONE as well (see Galveston TX and many State Employee and Teacher plans that do not participate in Social Security that work very well)

Patriots, after my prevous post in this thread, it dawned on me that even constitutionally enumerated term limits are worthless at this time.

More specfically, as mentioned in related threads, corrupt Congress is wrongly letting non-elected bureaucrats who run constitutionally undefined federal agencies get away with steaing legislative powers, including state powers, to effectively run the country.

So patriots need to work with Trump to get rid of so-called “independent federal regulatory agencies” so that Congress is once again running the country. (This means managing the US Mail Service (1.8.7) where domestic issues are concerned.)

Only after federal regualtory agencies are history will Trump’s constitutional term limits for elected federal officials have a significant impact imo.

I would think this is a very bad idea because if he goes through with it he will never have the support of Congress on anything if elected. He also needs Congress people to rally their supporters to vote for him.

The SCOTUS ruling you are referring to is where the states limit the terms. If it is a constitutional amendment its in the constitution therefore constitutional!

Trump knows all too well what to fix, now that they have tried to ruin the man!

This is a necessity.. term limits... and if need be, put it on the ballot for the people to vote for it.. (If congress won’t let an amendment work)..

Thanks for the link Hostage. Those proposed amendments are a great start.

Did you see post 92 of this thread?

Patriots also need to work with Trump to enumerate the following excerpt into the Constituiton.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

my feeble memory sparks a little and reminds me too that the 16th NEVER received ALL the necessary ratifications by the various states ergo it is not a legal Ammendment according to the Constitution.

Anyone feel free to chime in here but I believe this is a true, or close to true, statement.

Doesn’t matter. What’s done is done.

To undo it requires a beachhead in a special zone or willing jurisdiction to try a new form of taxation such as a uniform consumption tax with a uniform exempt floor, one that would be fully constitutional under the original provisions without the 16th.

If successful, the rest would follow suit automatically.

The key is to not allow the 16th to exist, even if all its code were abolished, at the same time as a better tax form because there would be a danger of having the income tax come back to life and then two forms of taxation would be imposed, a consumption tax and an income tax.

So an amendment is needed to give a time for the 16th to go away, in effect telling the country for example “you’ve got five years”. It has to be an amendment and not a law because future Congresses can start to chew at a law around its edge until the law is effectively defunct after a time.

“But we are only proposing just a 1% tax on the rich! That’s not asking too much, they can certainly afford that!”

And so it would begin all over again. The 1% goes to 3% to 7% to 12% etc. In 20 years time the tax creep would look like what exists today.

So it has to be an amendment.

I’m involved in the Convention of the States effort and I Totally agree with you.

Say what you will, but this country, technology and our population, demographics and DNA levels have CHANGED dramatically since 1776.

It’s TIME for CHANGES and an Article V Convention, which gets the federal government totally out of the process, is the ONLY option to save this country even IF Trump wins. Term Limits is a baby step forward.
