It's not the Supreme Court's job to fix sh!tty legislation. It can only decide cases on constitutional grounds.
Whether that should truly apply, however, was denied by 4 of the other justices. I’m not sure how they would have been wrong, not just a minority.

That’s true but it’s also true that the Constitution itself is interpreted by the Court in a manner that enables it to hand down decisions they deem are best suited to achieve desired political objectives. I believe what they do is sometimes referred to as Kabuki.
