Proof of that was Trump sweeping through the south and causing Cruz to be under 50% in Texas during the primaries. Team Cruz took it for granted that the 'evangelical' south would go for Cruz. It didn't, and that effectively ended the Cruz campaign.

Trump is managing to bring in supporters from nearly every demographic. None of the other 15 GOP candidates would have or could have done that.
