George H. W. Bush checking his watch in 1992. Al Gore invading George W. Bush's personal space in 2000. John McCain pointing at Barack Obama and derisively calling him "that one" in 2008.
Thought those were tripwire moments in the annals of presidential town hall debates? Just imagine the reaction if Republican Donald Trump on Sunday is forced to address his lewd 2005 hot-mic banter about groping women "by the psy" to a roomful of undecided voters.
Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton meet again at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, without their lecterns, for the second presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
Only this time, there's something else hanging over the proceedings: The impossible-to-ignore recordings about Trump's unrequited romantic dalliances, in which he bragged to Access Hollywood host Billy Bush that he "did try and fk" an unnamed married woman, later revealed to be Entertainment Tonight host Nancy O'Dell.
Damning as the 2005 tape has become after its release on Friday, how the whole incident plays before a crowd of uncommitted voters could get downright uncomfortable. The town-hall format can be thorny enough as it is.
"No pun intended in terms of the Republicans, but this recording is the elephant in the room," says Mitchell McKinney, one of the original consultants who worked with the Commission on Presidential Debates when the first town hall format was rolled out 14 years ago.

Exactly! My welding shop has no fainting couch! It does have ice gel in the medic kit if your ears set ablaze.
That’s basically what he had to do in the last debate. He had to push Lester Dolt aside in order to defend himself. They were trying to put him in a corner and they are going to try it tonight too.
I am impressed that you didn't dissolve into a puddle of tears hearing the tape! I agree with you that the debate will not be awkward. Not a bit. No more pussy footing around -- yes! And let's talk about the issues that our country faces.
Yup. I don’t know if I’m going to watch it. Hillary drives me nuts. That voice! She’s like my husband’s first wife.
Get ready for Hillary’s answer tonight: “I can see Russia in my emails.”
“”Answer when questioned, I was a democrat then and as you know you can be a democratic rapist today a get a pass so why not me””
Excellent.....As a democrat, there are passes available for every transgression - no questions asked!
Trump should spend a minimal amount of time on the tapes issue at the debate. Sincerely apologize. Then he might want to talk a little about how he has changed. His conversion to christianity. His wife and family influence on him. Slam Hillary for intimidating her husbands rape victims. Then pivot to wikileaks and HIllary’s issue. Don’t let her drag him into side issues the whole debate.
Candy Crowley is going to be there?
There’s also an enormous braying jackass in the room that the media is doing their best to ignore.
“”Trump should spend a minimal amount of time on the tapes issue at the debate.””
Agreed on the minimal time but I don’t think he needs to issue another apology. He’s already issued two - let it go at that. The less said the better. The more said, the more it will be twisted. I hope his advisors are telling him to think before he speaks!
People have lost sight of how this “debate” is going to be run. There won’t be questions from moderators and it depends on audience/viewers bringing up the video issue. SHE certainly can’t just plop it out there without questions from the audience. If no one brings it up, there won’t be an opportunity for him to get into it. I sincerely hope they take only questions from the audience members and dispense with the ridiculous tweets. Those will be loaded in her favor. Better not to have any at all.
All the stories about the Clinton’s have been around for a long time, nothing new.
Everyone needs to wake up and realize the Clinton’s are suckering all the Trump supporters into talking about anything except issues that matter.
It is a masterful political move by the Clinton’s to distract from Hillary’s liberal and immoral philosophy that she intends to take to the White House.
Think about it - who is in charge of the debate? Who is setting the agenda? The Clinton’s are using the media to decide what we talk about. FR posts are a perfect example of being led by the nose by them.
Trump needs to convince the undecided to ignore the personal and think about borders, Supreme Court, tax reform, security, and jobs.
That’s it, 5 points, no more. Hammer them home, talk about nothing else.
