George H. W. Bush checking his watch in 1992. Al Gore invading George W. Bush's personal space in 2000. John McCain pointing at Barack Obama and derisively calling him "that one" in 2008.
Thought those were tripwire moments in the annals of presidential town hall debates? Just imagine the reaction if Republican Donald Trump on Sunday is forced to address his lewd 2005 hot-mic banter about groping women "by the psy" to a roomful of undecided voters.
Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton meet again at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, without their lecterns, for the second presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
Only this time, there's something else hanging over the proceedings: The impossible-to-ignore recordings about Trump's unrequited romantic dalliances, in which he bragged to Access Hollywood host Billy Bush that he "did try and fk" an unnamed married woman, later revealed to be Entertainment Tonight host Nancy O'Dell.
Damning as the 2005 tape has become after its release on Friday, how the whole incident plays before a crowd of uncommitted voters could get downright uncomfortable. The town-hall format can be thorny enough as it is.
"No pun intended in terms of the Republicans, but this recording is the elephant in the room," says Mitchell McKinney, one of the original consultants who worked with the Commission on Presidential Debates when the first town hall format was rolled out 14 years ago.

Who's more presidential now?
Answer when questioned, I was a democrat then and as you know you can be a democratic rapist today a get a pass so why not me, lets talk about the issues something my opponent has screwed up for over 30 years but wants to fix it now.
Then Trump should turn it around and make the elephant sit on Hillary and her rapist husband.
The Donald should have a cigar in his hankey pocket, you know, just as a subtle warning :o)
THAT would be something to see!
THAT would be something to see!
This won’t be awkward. The truth needs to be center stage. Trump did not run to cosmetically be POTUS. He is the real deal, edges and all. Let’s talk early and often on who he is and what she has done and will do. Frank discussions need to occur. NO MORE pussy footing around.Bring it Hillary and crew. I am an angry female voter.
LOL ... we’d never hear the end of it!
None of this stuff is going to happen because Kelly Anne Conway has taken away The Donald’s chief weapon: his asymmetric warfare instincts. Unless, of course, he pushes her aside tonight and does his own thing.
How a filthy lying dog like Bill Clinton is not front and center this evening is beyond me.
All Trump has to say is “I said some crude things and I have apologized. Secretary Clinton, do you apologize for attacking and smearing your husband’s rape victims?”
I truly not sure if tonight is the right time to go after Bill’s bimbo problem. But judging by what Trump is putting up on twitter today, it’s on.
Or Clintons fantasy island endeavors with underage girls
Trump needs to schlong H->! in tonight’s “debate”.
I’ll have to check it out. I hate twitter but sometimes you just have to check in.
Know what you mean. I signed up for one reason, to follow Trump. I’m deleting my account after the election ASAP.
GIVE ME A BREAK. Donald Trump is a man, and men talk like “that” in private. Get over it. I can only imagine the Bamster-speak conducted behind closed doors. Yuck.
LOL, he’s on a twitter tirade this AM. 5 more since I last looked!
Absolutely true. Besides, who cares? Really? This is tame, a nothing story.
