One thing we learned to stock up on was the little solar sidewalk light stick thingies. You can see what voltage battery is in each one and pick the one that you use to recharge your regular batteries. PLUS the sidewalk light thingies will last till 3 or 4am when brought inside at dusk. Perfect to put one or two along a hallway or in a bathroom for night lights.
Just got off the phone with the Central Florida piece of my family. My sister won’t leave her trailer. I suspect she will change her mind last minute and is only being dramatic.
5PM is the critical hour for Central Florida - since records kept in 1851 this area never experienced a hurricane of this strength
Major impacts will be limited to FL and GA. Government, aided by sensationalist media, typically sows panic before hurricanes, with the implicit message that self-help is impossible and only government can save you. Every hurricane’s seen by government as an opportunity for a power grab. The idea that Pensacola and Tallahassee should be under a state of emergency is ridiculous. Maybe they should just mandate evacuation for the entire state?
You should have seen the vast media/government complex set up in downtown New Orleans the week after the storm, producing “The Katrina Show” while busing residents out of town at gunpoint with the message that it was too dangerous even to be standing on the street.
Tried to find news that the Gator/Tigers game at Gainesville on Saturday has been cancelled.
Nothing yet.
The Space Coast is pretty dark red. I hope this doesn’t suppress that vote.
Good move. Another good place to evacuate to is Sarasota. Sarasota has a long history of being spared by hurricanes.
They are deciding by 1pm today. Could be played Monday or most likely tacked on to end of season. A third option is to move the game to Baton Rouge if #1 and #2 are impossible. Being a conference game it just has to be played.
They are in my prayers...
It is not going below 900. It probably is not going below 930. The eye will be offshore most of the time, so that coastal folks will not be getting the worst of winds. The storm is moving at a good pace, so flooding from rain will not be widespread. When the end of the world comes, it’ll be way worse than this. Please get a grip.
By 2AM Saturday, the eye should be off South Georgia

Isn’t Rush right on the beach at Palm Beach? Think he’s evacuating, better be.
We have relatives in W. Palm, Orlando. Haven’t been able to reach them so our bet is they’ve moved out.
Hey, I have a brother in JAX who lives less than 1,000 feet from the river. He’ll trim his tree branches and be just fine. My wife has cousins in Sea Island. It’ll be a 2 by the time it gets there, and well out to sea. They’ll get on-shore winds, maybe tropical storm strength. Everybody needs to calm down. Some people have actually done this drill before, and are not gonna be stampeded by the media/government panic machine.
The primary models beg to differ. Also, the surge will be significant as this moves up the coast.
False. Stop scaring people.
Don't quite your day job to become a meteorologist. Most folks who are not hysterics are telling folks to take this very seriously. Kind of stupid to say if the eye is offshore nothing to worry about. The eyewall is forecasted to come very close to the coast and the hurricane force winds will extend well inland. If people being concerned bothers you, go troll another thread sport.
I guess you haven't seen the surge and rainfall predictions for the South Carolina coast.
Try to formulate opinions based on forecasts, not your own opinions.
EF-3 wind speeds - 136165mph
In other words, Cat 4 wind speeds.
You are just spewing nonsense, please take it elsewhere.
That’s what I just said to my husband....I am infuriated and sick to my stomach that when I am glued to the tv for information on the track and intensity of Matthew (we are one block from the intracoastal in Palm Beach County), I am subjected to the “she ate like a pig” ad, over and over and over and over.
