Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

A picture is worth ten million words if the goal is to keep people out of cars in flood zones. Dirtboy, do you have a credit for this one?
The current word from Duke Power is don’t expect power until Sunday. I’m hoping they’re pulling an Engineer “miracle worker” Scott gambit of lowering expectations. I don’t believe this is the case, however, as both power stations that handle my area are under water and it’s still rising, with the rivers and creeks not expected to crest until Wednesday or Thursday.
I’m combining this reply to you with a question from Caww about what caused the drowning of 2 people near Cartoon. If you check the pic posted by dirtboy in post 1466 you can see that the car is trapped on top of a drainage culvert. What seems to have happened was car’s occupants were driving along that flooded stretch of road and attempted to drive though that stretch where the water was flowing across. They could not know that the culvert was there and the current was washing the dirt around it out from under the pavement. When the car passed over that weakened spot the extra weight caused it to collapse. It happened so fast that the car was trapped and they couldn’t just drive on out. You’ll notice the car wasn’t actually “swept away” by the current - it happened so fast they never had a chance.
It was a tragic combination of ignorance, bad judgement and bad timing/luck. They should not have out driving, of course, but they also had no way of knowing about the hidden weakness of that particular spot on the road.
P.S. - while I’m still online I’ll take this opportunity to vent a little righteous anger. I’m on Duke Power here, and we won’t power till Sunday. Two miles down the road, Brunswick Electric Membership Co-operative (BEMC) customers had power yesterday afternoon. How could this be?
Well, 20 years or so ago, BEMC, being a member owned and managed Co-Operative, had the forsight to plow their profits into upgrading and storm-hardening their infrastructure. They spent the money to purchase high ground for power stations and to put power lines underground. As a result, even in the late 1990’s, when we were “hurricane alley”, with Bertha, Fran, Floyd, etc al. pounding us in rapid succession, Brunswick Electric service was back up way beforehand Carolina Power+Light (later became Progress Energy, then Duke Power).
After Floyd, CP+L (and successors) did put some power lines underground and made “some” improvements in sub-stations, etc.. They did next to nothing, though, to move vulnerable transformers and sub-stations to higher (more expensive) ground. They preferred to leave them in the swamps (cheap land, naturally) where they’re under six feet of water and the crews can’t even get to them for several more days.
So here we are today, with friends two miles away with power (and we’re happy for them), and folks here in town with no power anytime soon. The lesson in all this is to see the danger in allowing for-profit entities to operate as “public service utilities”, with all them concomitant benefits they get (tax breaks, regulatory benefits, etc.) While their management’s real priority is simply maximizing profits for stockholders’ dividends, rather than investing that money into insuring they have the infrastructure and resources to handle disasters like we’re facing now. In short, the way it’s being done, these “public service utilities” are a fraud much like so-called “free trade”.
Okay, rant off, I’m done. I’ll be my lovable, smiley self again once I get a bath and some cold to drink, I promise!

Meantime, we’ll go with what the forecasters are telling us and that’s for something at least 140mph at landfall... and it’s now at 140 in the Bahamas on the 11am advisory.

Winds were 45 mph in Florida .so your commie media lied lied and lied again. NOt 140 mph but 45mph . huge difference

I totally agree that the media is the enemy, and I do believe I have an idea who these people are.
I don't think however that I'm brainwashed by the media at all. In fact, my default position with anything coming from them is "it's probably a lie, if interested, investigate".
Not sure why you think I'm fooled by the MSM... they're the last ones I would trust on pretty much anything.
Weather models are neither media nor government (and no - I don’t trust either of the latter pair). The models failed this time because they did not forecast the formation of a double eyewall that ultimately spread the energy of the storm to a wider area.
Sure the massive win predicted didn’t get to shore - and that was merciful; it saved a bunch of lives - but the effects are still being felt because Matthew ended up being bigger. NC’s flooding is still causing issues, for instance.
You can do the victory lap - that’s fine. But this wasn’t hyped without cause - it was still a whisker away from being an incredible disaster on the Fla east coast.
