Human-Powered Vehicle Breaks World Record (89.59 mph)
The Engineer ^ | September 30, 2016

Posted on 10/03/2016 4:48:39 PM PDT by aquila48

Aerovelo’s human-powered vehicle “Eta” has broken the world record for fastest human-powered vehicle, reaching 89.59 mph/144.18 kph at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada. This record breaks the previous world record, also held by Aerovelo’s Eta of 86.65mph / 139.45kph, set last September.

Analysis of the vehicle performance showed that Eta requires less than 198 watts of pedal power at 90 km/h, which translates to a 9,544 MPGe highway fuel efficiency. According to Aerovelo, this is the highest per-passenger MPGe of any existing transportation technology at this speed.

“The efficiency of this vehicle seems impossibly high: it’s a powerful example of the massive change we can achieve with existing technology in the near future,” said Aerovelo co-founder Cameron Robertson. “Eta’s performance is a testament to the passion and engineering the team devoted to this endeavour, and showcases what can be achieved when we seek to do more with less.”

Aerovelo cofounder Todd Reichert used Eta to set 2 consecutive human-powered world records this September. Reichert achieved 88.26 mph/142.04 kph on September 14th, 2016 and 89.59 mph/144.18 kph on September 18th, 2016.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to be riding in something that efficient,” said Reichert. “It cuts through the air with such little resistance, and before you know it, you’re cruising at highway speeds on nothing more than your own power. When you realize that this is the same amount of power it takes to light up a few light bulbs, it’s truly mind blowing.”

He’s got cameras and screens inside that show him where he’s going.

Just think if ETA had 4 wheels, a little wider, with glass to see outside, ya think a 10 horsepower diesel could power it, and get huge mileage? like 500mpg or sometin’ like that?
run it on vegetable oil, it is carbon neutral...why not?

Two people are required to push start it. That doesn’t seem fair.

Is this one of the counties that was trying to secede from Nevada?

When you see efforts like this, you are seeing cutting edge technology. Everything is set for that speed record, weight, drag and airflow are tuned to the nth degree. As a usable machine, like a Formula One race car, this is not it! But the tech does translate down and that does make everyday things better.

A predecessor effort, 39+ years ago, was the first man-powered aircraft to fly a figure-eight course covering a measured mile (1.6 kilometers), the Gossamer Condor. At 70 lbs (31.75 kgs), it too was a marvel of applied technology and has led to a recognizable family of ultra-lightweight experimental aircraft.

While I may never break a HPV speed or altitude record, bicyclist and wheelchairs, just to name two areas will be happy to adapt these pioneering efforts, to the benefit of many!

That’s over 50 times the power it’s designed to use. Assuming you didn’t strip out the drive. But that 10 Hp should get you up to about 300 MPH, good luck with that, wear a helmet.

It’s still enough to get a speeding ticket!

>> reaching 89.59 mph

Quite precise for an Eta.

” I was skiing pretty fast then, water skiing as fast as the boats would go”

You never “cracked the whip”? Our boat was good for about 50 MPH but if you turned sharp and the skier went wide you could hit 70+. I lost it once and the last thing I remember was hearing a “clunk”. Came to in the boat with a bloody ice filled rag being held to my forehead. I’d caught my ski in the head and cold cocked myself.

Here are several pics I made to commemorate the two jumps over the Snake River.

The first one I made in B&W.

The I came up with a second one in color.

Then I made a few motivational posters.

The most significant advances in recumbent speed bikes were made by a guy named Matt Weaver who created the Kyle Edge which was the predecessor to his ETA Edge. He was an elite athlete by performance standards in addition to being a fantastic engineer.

This is pretty much as fast as anyone is going to go unless there are some incredible weight savings by using some material that doesn't yet exist but even then it would likely be only incremental.

So, if you're interested in speed bikes, google Matt Weaver.

Quite a feat! BUT, there should be a "purist" bike contest:

The rules would be that you get on or into the vehicle with no help and you move ONLY by your energy. It it has a top, no help putting it on. The vehicle should not be held by a person before it starts moving. Use a stand that's part of the bike or lean it against a wall. Also, no fair getting a push start. You shouldn't have to have two guys pushing. (Also, "bicycle" means two wheels on the ground only. Someone claimed a record on a tricycle.) You also can't ride behind another vehicle.

Yes, the gear ratio is so high, starting becomes difficult. So, design a transmission that makes it possible!

Here's another bike feat!
