Some people would choose not to live as slaves. The Boxer Rebellion comes to mind.

However, I suspect the whole Arab Nationalism/Socialism thing still appeals to them.

The Boxer Rebellion was in 1899 after decades of foreign domination of China and where the protagonists were the majority. The Christians in Iraq have always been a minority and especially so at the start of the 1900s.

Socialism positions equality of people, which is why oppressed people such as Christians under Moslem rule or Jews in Europe were attracted to it.

The USA doesn't do socialism but it promotes equal-opportunity capitalism.

Offer people equal opportunity and the rest of the economic construct doesn't matter to them
