5 Safety Tips for Getting Pulled Over While Carrying a Concealed Firearm(OH rules)

The police are nervous when they pull you over. They don't know you. They don't know what you will do. They have to deal with some of the most evil, violent, and completely unpredictable people on earth. They don't want to die. So if you are legally carrying a concealed firearm when you are stopped by the police and you make any sudden or threatening move, you just might get shot.

So what should you do, as a law-abiding citizen with a concealed-carry weapon, when you are stopped by the police? Here are the official guidelines, according to the laws of my state (Ohio). They are probably the same for other states as well. I have followed these rules after getting pulled over, and everything turned out just fine (thank God).

"It’s usually pretty smart to stick the firearm out the window, too, that way the officer knows where it is and can see clearly that you are a CCW holder."

And wave it around a bit so they can tell just what kind it is.

My favorite trick is to yell out it isn't loaded, then point it at them so they can look down the barrel and see I'm telling the truth.

There’s a place where there are many stops (in my area) a long stretch of 2 lane road with no turn offs. So I get stopped frequently at this place. They are probably looking for drugs or something. I always hand them my CCW and my drivers license. I’ve never had a problem or a snide remark. Always courteous to me and me to them. I’ve never been asked “where” the weapon is located. Once they look at the permit and license, I’m on my way 30 seconds later. It is a non-event.

I’m getting older, driving slower, and I don’t get pulled over as much anymore these days, knock on wood. But, I always did the following and I never got hassled or threatened (although I got plenty of speeding tickets in my day)...

1. Turn off the car, roll down the window, and remove hat and sunglasses before the cop gets to my car.

2. Take out my wallet, DL, registration, and proof of insurance and have them on the dash right in front of the steering wheel before the cop gets to my car.

3. By the time he gets there, my hands are back at 10 and 2 on the wheel and I politely wait for instructions and answer questions. Everything I need is right there.

I choose not to disclose CCW status.

Yes. Constitutional Carry went into effect a year ago here in Maine.

The Maine House (controlled by democrats) and the Maine Senate (controlled by the GOP) passed it in July 2015....it went into effect October 2015.

The GOP governor Paul LePage signed the bill after changes were made....the 21 or older stipulation was changed to 18 or older for members of the military.

The same bill made switch blades legal, too.

We have had Open Carry for quite some time....no permit necessary for that, either.

That works pretty good if you use full metal jacket ammo and hit it once in awhile with Brasso. Of course, you are the expert in hitting it.

He doesn't know that your innocent actions in trying to be helpful are in order to find your registration. He doesn't know if you're looking for a gun, hiding drugs, or what.

Wife got stopped the other dayI was riding and officer asked for registration.

I told him before I ever raised a hand that I had a gun in the glove box. He said if you don't show me yours I won't show you mine.

That is a keeper — funny, timely advice. Great ML King quotation at end. Thanks for posting.
