Two Sacramento police officers attempted to run over a mentally ill homeless man with their car less than 35 seconds before they shot and killed him, according to recordings released by police this month.
One of the officers says f--- this guy in the frantic final minute before they shot Joseph Mann on Del Paso Boulevard. Moments later, the driver says, Im going to hit him.
OK. Go for it. Go for it, his partner responds.
During that sequence, the officers gunned their vehicle toward Mann, backed up, turned and then drove toward him again, based on dashcam video released by police. They stopped the car, ran toward Mann on foot and shot him 14 times.
The July 11 incident has sparked protest from local religious and black leaders, who say Sacramento Police Department officers escalated the situation and unnecessarily resorted to lethal force.
The content of the dashcam audio was first reported by the Sacramento News and Review. The Bee reviewed the clip of Officers Randy Lozoya and John Tennis after enhancing the audio to highlight their voices.
The dashcam video was released Sept. 20 after The Sacramento Bee obtained surveillance footage from a private citizen that showed the officers shooting Mann. Within an hour of The Bee posting the footage online, Sacramento police called a news conference to release video from three dashboard cameras as well as audio from two 911 calls and other information.

“The cartridges are very expensive.”
So let’s just use bullets, they’re cheaper? Human life has gotten cheaper here than in some third-world countries. It appears that any pretext is good enough for cops to use deadly force today. There’s no need for the cops to let this guy get away, but there is also little need to kill him. The escallation between citizens and the cops is serious, and it extends to those of us who are rational as well. I want nothing to do with the cops, because I know they have little regard for me and my life at the end of the day. Killing seems to be the method of choice for the cops when other avenues are available.
Not the police. This is already well established legally that police do not have a duty to protect. This is why 2A rights are so important, because the only person morally, ethically and legally responsible to protect you is you.
I've seen videos of European or UK officers dealing with knife wielding nutjobs by using their riot shields to form a Roman phalanx to enclose and surround the nut job until they drop the knife. I just think we might be doing it wrong.
There are too many here who are the spiritual brothers of BLM who post distorted or plain dishonest reports about police incidents.
Come on man.
On meth, with a knife, maybe a gun.
They should have just let him go on his way.

Everything the government does is “very expensive” it seems, down to airplane toilet seats.
One exception, it seems to buy lead ammunition like it were gold.
Everybody may be “maybe a gun.”
Not if a cop does. Nor is it any kind of crime if a cop shoots someone under some mythical threat.
If a citizen were to "defend" themselves in this way they'd be in jail.
Mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento, in power since 2008.
His fault.
How did you draw the conclusion that since taser cartridges are expensive that cops prefer to use their fire arms?
Its just a statement of fact nothing more.
I think if you don’t use meth and run around with a knife, you will be just fine, like most other law abiding folks.
And what other avenues are available?
The police actually were more likely to kill you in the 60s, 70, and 80s because there was no internet, no 24 hour new sources, and nobody gave tinkers damn about what was happening outside their own city and didn’t give a care about POS criminals getting killed by police.
The police have not duty to protect any ONE individual but a duty to protect society as a whole. That is why they have a duty to stop this guy BEFORE he hurts any other citizen.
I’ve seen the video of the UK cops with the shields and those officers are flipping idiots to even accept such use of force policies. The only reason they do is because not enough of them have not been killed or injured.
Now on the other hand, 60k cops in the US are assaulted each year, 10k required hospitalization. Police work is hands down the most dangerous job FOR WORKPLACE VIOLENCE.

“How did you draw the conclusion that since taser cartridges are expensive that cops prefer to use their fire arms?”
It was an oblique attempt at humor! That said, it does seem all too frequent that one cop starts tazering a person and the other guy immediately “chimes in” with gunfire. That has happened several times recently. It’s like no one is in charge of a situation so each cop does his own thing. To be sure, most of these recent cop shootings did in someone who was not your average good citizen, but you can’t take the attitude that it’s “alright” because the individual was “unsavory.” I just wonder when it will get bad enough that upstanding citizens get killed. None of it is o.k. with me.
Yes, that is my point. Apparently the technique works, or they wouldn't be doing it.
Also if you check your source more carefully you will find bartenders had a higher rate of workplace violence and even though police come in 2nd for workplace violence, they still don't even make into the top 15 occupations for workplace fatalities.
It is also true that police have higher rates of criminality than the general population. It's the job of the self-governed to police their police. It's the only way to avoid tyranny.
