Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.
Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:
Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

I don’t think the winds were that strong with SSS (obviously, since it was a tropical storm) but the storm surge combined with higher-than-normal tides caused all the damage. At least, that is my recollection. I do remember that they have huge snowfalls on the west side of it. That was crazy.
“...horrible news for Haiti.”
And what’s on the other half of Haiti’s island?
The Dominican Republic, that’s what.
The Libs can’t squeeze any money out of a successful economy like the DR.
AND, they don’t give a damn!
I agree with you. The only thing I miss about up north, is deer hunting.
Both boats are pulled and secure. Kevlar screens down on the patio, generator tank topped off.
Now for a few glasses of red wine.
Here in coastal Georgia I just returned from The Cloister and they are closing tomorrow. They wont reopen until Sunday. Gas stations have small lines and a few “appear” to be out of gas. I have plenty of gas, lots of water, freeze dried food, canned food, and if my generator arrives(???..go Amazon) I will be alright.
Best wishes and God’s blessings to all in the path of this storm. This is a powerful hurricane.
My stepmom(86)is in Jupiter (Jonathan’s Landing). My brother (Lake Worth) is at her home now, hopefully securing shutters. I wish they would just fly north. Ironically, they were here 2 weeks ago. Mom wanted to be away from FL during the season. This one is a bit late....and yes, I’m worried.
Been doing my preps for 2 days,we are under a Tropical Storm watch in central Florida. All it takes is one downed tree to lose power for a week or more in some areas. Thats what happened with Hermine. Rural areas with wells also do not have water. Stores getting low on supplies everywhere. Nervous about this storm!
Any of you that have never experienced a major hurricane, it's quite an interesting experience. The howling wind, the large debris hitting your house and the rain blowing in around your shutters. My kids at the time thought it was real cool, me and wife not so much.
Louisiana had a hurricane hit in 2012 where the cleanup took about 1-2 months. It was a category 1-2 but it stopped for nearly a day and kept hammering with wind and rain.
A cat 4 doing that would be hellish.

Hurricane Camille had 190 mph sustained winds at landfall in the U.S. but this was in 1969 https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/surge_details.asp
funny that there haven't been any major Hurricanes hitting the U.S. in a long time . Liberals and the media have told us we'd be getting hit by much stronger monster hurricanes by now because of their global warming . this proves global warming is hoax. Mathew already down to 120mph winds
So we really don't have a lot of precedent for what's about to happen there.
At the 5pm advisory, I expect the cone will shift westwards to reflect the recent GFS and Euro runs that take Matthew to the coast around West Palm Beach and all the way up to Charleston. Might be a good time to start a new thread in Breaking News, as this the most qualified storm for such since Sandy.
Just spoke to mom, brother got the shutters up..but they may leave in the a.m. towards the west coast. And yes, I remember the Hell they went through with those 2 storms...ugh
FWIW, the mods acquiesced to my request earlier in the afternoon (thankyouverymuch!), and this is now the breaking news thread.
Info at the top of the thread is way out of date. Should be a new post, IMO. FRegards.
Okay. I defer to the choice of our thread Mom, the NautiNurse.
Good news--87yo cowboy decided to come along with mom. I think the visit from LEO got him to thinking about the sanity of his decision. They also informed him that everyone else in their building had already departed. He was going to be very alone.
Of course, that meant that everyone had to wait while he packed his bug out bag. Eeeesh.
Report from evacuation highways--bumper-to-bumper traffic with lots of RVs.
Real good to hear... at least everybody has 24 hours to get gone... and RVs mean less pressure on scarce hotel rooms (unless everybody goes to Disney).
Hopefully tolls were suspended on the turnpike... that’s the usual practice. Orange County would do well to do the same.
West side of the northbound storm is the “clean” side for storm surge. There may be some pile up as the storm approaches, will be swept back out on the backside of the storm.
