The police video footage of the last moments of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardiss life shows deputy marshals firing a barrage of bullets at his fathers S.U.V. after a car chase on the dark streets of central Louisiana. It shows his father slumped over the open car window, injured and bleeding.
Minutes later, the words of an officer can be heard: Theres a juvenile.
The deputies had fired 18 times into the car, prosecutors say. The boy, strapped to the front passenger seat of the car, was struck five times in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In the aftermath, one of the officers appeared to vomit, according to audio from the footage.
The video was released on Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in a Louisiana court before the deputy marshals, Officer Norris Greenhouse Jr. and Lt. Derrick Stafford, were tried on charges of second-degree murder. It was the first public glimpse of what happened on Nov. 3 in Marksville, a small city near the Mississippi border.
It raised questions about basic police tactics and the wisdom of high-speed chases. But the fatal shooting of the child, who was white, received little of the national attention that has trailed other police killings. It spurred no organized street protests; no viral hashtags; no movement like Black Lives Matter, which was sparked by anger and despair over a wave of killings of African-Americans by law enforcement officials.

When in doubt, shoot? Even though you have no idea what your shooting at?
This happened in DC as well when the women drove on the capital grounds. The police went nuts. In that video they were clearly mad and started to shoot at her in a crowed city from as much as 50 yards away. When they finally executed her, they had her car trapped and they shot her several times through the car. Later they found a baby in the back seat who had somehow survived all the shootings. Police have to understand that cars can have more than one person in them. Its been that way since Bonnie and Clyde. A hail of bullets is not good police work.
Unfortunately, that appears to be the case some days. Shoot and don't stop shooting until you are sure that whatever you are shooting at is dead. This certainly seems to be the SOP for many police forces..... beyond that one can argue about justification but if that MO is accepted and practiced, there will be some percentage of collateral damage. That's just a statistical fact. In the age of technology in which we live, one has to ask why shoot with bullets that kill as the first tactic to use when there are other ways that can render a target immobile very quickly.
As much as people don't like it, this is the truth about this matter.
It may not be “right” but one can hope. Police have become the modern day Gestapo and everyone is getting fed up.
Where are the riots? Where are they activists screaming racism? Oh my God...this is all so stupid. The man did not follow orders and backed his vehicle up and the police could NOT see the boy in the seat. Not guilty.
I wonder what these officers put in their report to justify this?
If the cops been white and the dad and son been black, the news article would have noted within the first paragraph that the white police shot an unarmed black child. I scanned the article and saw no reference to the race of the black cops. This is typical NYT reporting.
+1
It looks racist. The death penalty for both.
They knew they were shooting at a man backing his vehicle toward them. Unless they shot the child on purpose because of the father’s girlfriend being involved with one of the marshals. Then they need to be face the consequences. So far, the whole thing is convoluted, at least from what I’ve read.
>> You need to read more about them and the shoot
Didn’t realize this happened nearly a year ago.

The ignorance of what some folks deal with
I was just through there going to Breaux Bridge for a family dinner at Cafe des Amis
Grew up with a lake house in Tensas in St Joesph
It’s a rural world of white wealth for the most part and black political power and those in between
Especially in the true la delta towards ferriday and waterproof
This incident also brings to light is it ok to shoot if not shot at?
Car as a weapon maybe
Really bad guy like a Muzz terr

There is no rationalizing
My niece works for the Ridgeland Police Dept, dispatch. She’s told me some very interesting anecdotes of the relationship between her dept and the Hinds Co dept.
Well, yes, it is. I have seen the police killing people for no reason, only that they could and getting away with it until I hope for the best and expect the worse. At one time I had confidence in the justice system, but reality educated me. Waco and Ruby Ridge were two of the classes.
I trusted the excerpt presented adequate context, and figured this was a recent tragedy that needed time to unfold.
Anyway, details appreciated.
Good to see you too, FRiend.
