HOLLIDAYSBURG - Blair County has received requests for almost 800 absentee ballots so far from registered voters who want to participate in the November election.
The normal number is about 300, county Director of Elections Sarah Seymour said Friday.
And there's still time to ask - through Nov. 1.
Pennsylvania's election laws allow the distribution of absentee ballots for several reasons.
In Blair County, the elections office typically distributes them, upon request, to voters who will be outside their municipality on Election Day and to voters with an illness or disability...(snip)
Seymour also said Friday that her office has received telephone calls from people interested in being poll watchers. When Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was in Altoona, he urged his supporters to volunteer their time to watch for voter fraud on Election Day.
Pennsylvania allows candidates and political parties to designate poll watchers, but they also must be credentialed in advance by the county board of elections.
"We have to issue a certificate that the poll watcher can show to the (precinct) judge," Seymour said. "And we can do that, even on the day of election."
Pennsylvania currently requires poll watchers to live within the county where they will monitor the voting process. But Republican lawmakers are trying to get that changed, in time for the Nov. 8 election, so anyone registered to vote in Pennsylvania could be a poll watcher at a Pennsylvania precinct.
