Back when I was a pup in the newspaper business, legendary reporter Peter Kihss gave me lifetime advice about covering politicians. Remember, he said, there are no such things as stupid questions, only stupid answers.
Which brings us to Lester Holt and the accusations that the moderator tipped Mondays debate in favor of Hillary Clinton. Holts bias was obvious, but the impact was not inevitable. It mattered largely because, shockingly, Donald Trump was shocked that Holt was in the tank for Clinton.
How could Trump not see that coming? And if he did, why wasnt he better prepared?
Holt never pressed Clinton with any substantive follow-ups, while Trump repeatedly was asked to defend or explain what he had just said or said in the past.
Holt insisted repeatedly Trump had supported the Iraq War, despite the candidates denials, and asked pointed questions about his taxes and the Obama birther issue. Yet Clinton got only one obligatory question on the email scandal, and not a single one about the Clinton Foundation, her Wall Street speaking fees or her health all of which have figured far more prominently in the campaign than Iraq or the birther issue.
It was outrageous but no surprise. After all, Holt is part of the Big Media establishment that has uniformly protected President Obama and broken all its own standards to trash Trump and elect Clinton.

No, Trump was NOT truly shocked by it. If he seemed so, he was bringing attention to it by giving the audience emotional cues to attach THEIR shock to. Like a laugh track in a comedy show, except in this case, selling himself as the President.
The technique is probably in his Art of the Deal book somewhere. I’ve never read it, but my experiences with salesmen tell me it’s entirely possible.
I’m more concerned about the Dept of Homeland Security stealing the election for Hillary. Why should we trust the DHS for maintaining integrity when we know what this government did with the IRS, the DOJ, and all the other lies?
Today if whistle blowers go to the press they would be outed!!! EVEN if we had patriots inside the government that wanted to report the corruption they have NO WHERE to go the press doesn’t give a DAMN unless of course it is a republican!!! The press is complaisant with the corruption, Nixon was Mother Theresa compared to Clinton and the press could CARE LESS!!!!
Bingo!!! Nice Catch!
Absolutely correct.
He knowingly reacted and telegraphed the feelings of the audience at the Holt debacle.
The audience “got” the message.
Interesting also was a twitter link in the comments section to the you tube video showing someone getting a notebook from the podium. https://twitter.com/MPierce1337/status/781008057811828736
Has anyone done the research to see if those were the only times she scratched her face?
Obama got about 80% of the vote in Marin Co. in 2008 and nearly as much in 2012.
Woodward and Bernstein remind me of Simon and Garfunkel. One made it long-term, the other didn’t....quite. Woodward has become the “official” spokesman for the Establishment version of events and personages in politics for the last 40 plus years. He is Wa Po. I don’t expect anything of interest from him, ever.
I spent over 25 years in the military. I assure you - had I made a “mistake” like that, I’d be in prison for the rest of my life!
I disagree as well. I have been telling my daughter who lives in California (nuff said), that the media has been very unfair and untruthful about Trump. She had a hard time believing me, until Monday night...she’s switched her vote...contact NBC and let them know there is a reason 2/3 of America no longer buys their spin. I believe they are a dying business...thank goodness!
You are absolutely correct. Trump was not shocked, but he was faced with having to do double duty he may not have anticipated. He was restrained going against Clinton in areas she was confidently UNrestrained in going against him, and THEN he had to face the obvious bias coming from Holt, as the predictable handmaiden to Clinton. That would be enough to drive me up the wall.
Whistle blowers have only one place to leak to these days—Moscow.
Snowden was ahead of his time.
“How could Trump not see that coming? And if he did, why wasnt he better prepared”
20/20 hindsight. i don’t think anyone expected this level of bias. Trump had to prepare for Hillary, not for Holt. Deternining bias on the fly is difficult because it’s cumulative and it’s underhanded. And he can’t sound like he’s whining on the stage.
Next time, no excuse, he’ll be ready when/if it happens.
Everyone was on to her earpiece so she had to invent a new way to cheat.
Heh.
A newspaper endorsement is as archaic as the newspaper itself.
It’s amazing how many American admire Karl Marx though they really know nothing about him.
What we have by now is truly a separate social class with its own mores and class interests, exercising an illegitimate political influence. That illegitimacy inevitably causes resentment eventually, and appears to have done so after quite a time in the public eye. The celebrity and the feeling of empowerment are, however, incredibly seductive and not only rewarding to the self-absorbed but tend to attract that sort of personality into the business, a nasty little feedback loop that has resulted in the gaggle of ego monsters who now flatter themselves that they're running the country.
What is happening now through alternative media - the one we're using here on FR - is that the power is far more widely distributed and hence diluted, and the power holders are no more moving with the times than the dinosaurs in the La Brea tar pits did (witness the hilarious concentration of venom toward a cartoon frog to see just how out of touch they really are). They're clutching desperately and obviously at the power they feel slipping away. Their long-suffering audience seems particularly unsympathetic and is about to elect a fellow who was able to point it all out and still prevail. And the anger and resistance to him is that of spoiled children who like their little game just as it is, thank you very much, and don't want it taken away.

True! And any nation where its citizens must seek redress from an external entity is doomed to fall.
