The media hated Trump's pitch. But then it was going to hate anything he said. Among undecideds, particularly those who just watched it unprompted, it seemed to resonate.
Letosky entered the evening undecided in a town that is heavily Democratic in registration. Her sister and father are on opposite sides of the political aisle. Donald Trump had the upper hand this evening, she said, citing his command of the back-and-forth between him and Hillary Clinton.
Reed, 35, is a registered Democrat and small businessman. By the end of the debate, Clinton never said a thing to persuade me that she had anything to offer me or my family or my community, he said, sitting at the same bar that has boasted local icons as regulars, such as the late Fred Rogers, and Arnold Palmer, who had his own stash of PM Whiskey hidden behind newer bottles of whiskey for his regular visits.
Have to say Trump had the edge this evening, he came out swinging but also talked about specifics on jobs and the economy, Reed said.
Reed said Clinton came across as either smug or as though she was reading her résumé, adding there was nothing on her résumé that touched on his life. I am a small businessman, a farmer, come from a long line of farmers and coal miners. The policies she talked about tonight ultimately either hurt me or ignore me, he said.
Ive been a Democrat all of my life, but when Clinton mentions her husband and the jobs he brought to the country in the 90s, its not a fair assessment. She is no moderate Democrat the way he was, her policies would not bring back jobs, said Nathan Nemick.
It burns Nemick when Clinton references her husband, like she did in the debate on trade and jobs. She is nothing like him, he said of the Democrat he admired in his youth.
The McClatchy lineup isn't too favorable to Trump, but it's Hillary who loses big.
Kae Roberts and Jay Eardly were leaning toward Hillary Clinton before Monday nights debate.
By the end, they had both pulled away.
John Kokos and Hank Federal were undecided going in, potential Clinton backers.
By the end, theyd ruled her out.
Indeed, while polls found that Clinton had won the first general-election debate with Donald Trump on Monday, she may not have won actual votes. And she may even have lost some, at least in the battleground state of North Carolina.
In a focus group of 21 voters from around Charlotte conducted by McClatchy and The Charlotte Observer, four who had been up for grabs before the debate had moved away from her by the end.
The media is calling it a win, but as usual with Hillary, it's not a win if you don't appeal to anyone.
I'm wearing my shocked face.
Even Brit Hume said Hitlery won.
Brit Hume is a frikkin’ dope by the way.
The DC political class just doesn’t get it.....they are so far out of touch
Because he isn’t the Uniparty.
Makes no difference who “won” the debate, if by now having listened to the candidates for several months, if you haven’t picked your candidate, forget it. It is obvious that Clinton has NOTHING NEW to offer, and relying on her record of achievements after many years in the political limelight, she has brought absolutely ZERO to the table that meant or did anything to improve this country or its people. Trump made that very clear during that debate. She is once again, bringing NOTHING NEW to the table. Vote TRUMP!!!!
The first debate doesn’t mean anything. Trump is saving his attacks for the last debate.
I’m actually a little surprised. I thought he didn’t do as well as Hillary, but we tend to be more critical of our own.
Bottom line is this is a landmark election. All the old rules have been discarded. What I might see as a win, is actually a loss.
“What I might see as a win, is actually a loss.”
Yes, “the thrill of agony . . . the victory of defeat!”
But you are right. This is a landmark election. It is being waged at a more fundamental level than party affiliation, political philosophy, or policy options. It is resonating on the question of whether we will be a free people living in a nation of our own.
Arnie Palmer in a bar I can visualize, but Fred Rogers? I guess that's what made the day in the neighborhood so "beautiful."
Trump clearly has the vision, momentum and the right people on his side. Brit Hume is part of the old guard who is about to get swept away by the Trump tidal wave that is coming ashore soon!
The first few exchanges were very targeted towards targeting those voters. The trade issues, the jobs, the broken 30 years of Washington. That resonated very well with many voters, even if not perfectly delivered. He dove right into it, it was planned and well used to counter the drivel talking points from Clinton. The last half, he was way off script, and not effective but in the beginning he was.
A very good liberal friend stopped by yesterday. We have an agreement not to talk politics. Pigs were flying when she brought up the debate and said she was glued to the tv watching. She is now supporting trump along with her son and husband. This is a movement. Americans want their country back from the media and corrupt politicians both republican and democrat.
As Scott Adams said, Hillary may have “won the debate”, but Trump won the election. I don’t think that phony, condescending smile she wore all night worked. It was supposed to get people to laugh at Trump, but it just came off creepy.
You are so right. This is an incredibly important election; the future of the country depends on it.
And her super creepy fake smile isn’t working anymore.
Trump is a true patriot.
Else, Trump came out on top.....
Brit Hume is another Dana Perino . Probably voting for Hillary .
Probably right.
