Who won the first presidential debate Monday night between Democratic presidential nominee and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Republican nominee, businessman Donald Trump, at Hofstra University?
This was the first for three debates the two candidates will take part in before the Nov. 8 general election. With the race running so close in key battleground states like Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, both candidates needed to dominate and score points with undecided voters in the 90-minute performance at Hofstra University on Long Island.
Two national polls released just hours before Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump met in their first presidential debate placed the race for the White House in a virtual dead heat.
Clinton led Trump, 47 percent to 46 percent, in a Quinnipiac University poll and the two candidates were tied at 46 percent in a Bloomberg Politics survey.
A McClatchy/Marist poll last week showed, 69 percent of Trump supporters said they strongly supported the Republican nominee, compared with 62 percent of Clinton backers who said the same about their candidate.

I get the feeling it probably was a draw. Trump seems to have done well on numerous fronts and it was quite obvious from the get go that Holt was covering for Hillary. Where he may have come up short, it can probably be stuff to learn from going forward. I can’t see Hillary making herself seem convincing or likeable from this performance.
She got under his skin. It showed.
I’d say it was a draw. Trump rattled Hillary a couple of times however he let her get him into the weeds. He should not let her side track him. He’s needs to pound her more on the e-mails and Benghazi.
Sadly you could not be more wrong if you tried.
I love how you butt hurt Cruze bots are so willing to be Hillary camapign shills rather then admit your analysis is based wholly on your petulance that St Ted of Tx got his ass kicked.
Really. How did that happen?
Really. How did that happen?
Except for the fact that nobody trusts Hillary because of her constant lying, so nothing she said during the debate had meaning.
uhm...
NO.
He did not attack “the girl” when he clearly could have done so, but he choked back the “bile” and let us finish her off in our own words with what he “could have said”.
Next time, he should go ahead and accuse her of leaking national secrets, and enabling cyber crime at the Department of State with an unprotected public server for state national security emails...
Or perhaps she will go into “I am too sick” mode, and Donald can flush her out in such a way that she cannot use that time to prepare for release of her next, newly minted pile of lies...
She gained nothing tonight...
No she didn’t. How about you put some cream on the Cruz butt hurt instead of clinging to your petulance?
And he got under hers a few times. You could see her face tighten and she looked pissed.
How so. Trump was Trump. She failed to get a blow in on him. Face it she can’t defend her record.
I think Trump did well speaking plainly to the fears Americans have on visceral level.
Hillary appealed to the green, anti-police, free stuff crowd.
I know Hillary is a crook, a liar, and an extension of more Obama.
But I wish Trump would not talk about his empire quite so much, not make faces and put her on defense with facts.
Hillary 30 failed years a politician with a smooth lying tongue.
Trump a businessman with common sense, gets results, says it like it is.
It's sad, but that's basically all she had to do tonight. Her canned, memorized answers are going to look good to a large number of people who don't follow the news or politics closely.
Still butt hurt over Cruz? Sheesh. Trump did fine. Hillary lied multiple times tonight.
Nailed it! That’s exactly what occurred tonight!
I think a lot of us were expecting more from Trump and that is the disappointment we’re showing...
Considering the way the moderator treated him, he held his own...
My millenial daughter, who refuses to vote for Trump, watched all 90 minutes, to let Hillary close the deal. Now she’s not voting this fall.
I wouldn't go that far. He lost the debate because he didn't go straight for the jugular, and let her slide on her canned responses. Clinton's biggest plus in this debate was that she didn't pass out during it. That is actually going to be a serious plus to many uninformed people.
I can't believe he didn't make a single mention of her pay-for play clinton foundation
