Is it time for Roger Goodell and the NFL to hit the panic button?
Last weeks Sunday Night Football matchup drew in its lowest ratings in seven years (Monday Night Football didnt fare any better) and last nights game between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings fell even further. According to Deadline, the primetime portion of last nights game scored a 13.7/22 in Nielsens metered market ratings as the Vikings went on to beat the Packers 17-14. Not only is that down 18% from last years ratings, its also a 9% dip compared to the SNF opener just last week.
So whats causing the sharp drop in interest? Clearly, many people have gotten turned off by the political protests during the national anthem, but The Guardians DJ Gallo argues that the play hasnt been compelling enough to keep viewers watching:
The NFL has been a great escape for its fans from the larger problems of the world. The less of an escape the NFL provides, the more its fans will eventually find their own escape. Is that what were seeing now? Its still too early to tell, but with the other issues hanging over the league, they may not want to wait for long to find out.
I love a lot of sports but I’m with you....slowly disengaging....and it doesn’t hurt one bit...not one bit....
In what way is the play poor? From strictly a talent viewpoint, it’s obviously vastly superior to college football. Amazingly, this season has seen an incredible number of extremely close games. I think Kaepernik is proving to be to football what the Cleveland Disco Riot was to disco: a breaking point at which people said, “enough is enough!”
(”... is enough, I can’t go on...” Sorry. I couldn’t help that.)
My perspective too brother. Fortunately archery season has opened.
It’s time for Goodell to drop dead, for the good of football and America. He’s a totalitarian in performance, and yet still a loser like his leftist, gutless father.
I hope that Tom Brady pisses on his grave and leaves a deflated football on it, as a token of his love for him.
As you can see, I’m not a fan of the Football Fascist.
I decided not to tune in to over paid whiners.
I guess they are now there to whine instead of doing their jobs.
I’d like to know if the betting action in Nevada is down or not.
Good riddance-disrespect the flag and disrespect the country and expect to find another high paying job in Bolivia.
No more for me. Traitor thugs.
Athletes would be wise to keep their politics out of sports and just do what they’re paid to do. We don’t watch the NFL to hear some player’s ‘cause’ - we watch it for sports entertainment.
Insert billionaires wringing hands pic (here)..
Reap what ya sow.. Peddle crap,,
What do you expect customers to do?
They want to see a game, not a political rally.
They weren't very classy about it, but they did at least replace him with a better coach.
Got better things to do Sunday than watch ungrateful overpaid @shholes. They can all go to hell and burn before I watch again.
The NFL's day is about over with and I say good riddance!
This and all the PC stuff has caused my enthusiasm for NFL football to wane the last few years.
Years of observing the refs, you can tell what teams are favored by what they allow each team to get away with. The NFL has become as bad as pro wresting in that regard.
