MY ARTIST OF THE WEEK....
PAUL HARDCASTLE/JAZZMASTERS~Inner Changes
At 2:04, youll catch a quick glimpse of the young Lucille Ball, who was then known primarily as one of the Goldwyn Girls, a chorus lineup. She would later become a TV star and one of the most astute businesswomen in the game. In a great irony, she would later buy RKO and turn it into Desilu in the Fifties. She was the one who green-lighted Gene Roddenberrys Star Trek in 1966. From that small acorn grew a mighty oak.
Fred always had issues with Gingers costumes, which led to more than one contretemps on the set. Gingers mother often had to step in to keep the peace. In this take, Gingers sleeve slaps Fred in the face, creating a moment of movie magic. For 23 more takes, they tried to duplicate that strike, eventually deciding to use Take #1 and just go with it. Gingers dress was as sheer and transparent as the movie censors would allow, and the designer was cutting it close!
The song features that minor-to-major modulation common to songs of the Thirties. Fred gives it a heartfelt touch, and the dance sequence is one of the great seductive dances of movie history. Weve lost a lot in 80 years.
