I'm sure people have been buying ambassadorships for a long time. For most countries it's not even a serious position in government, anyway.
But when someone donates $3.5M in exchange for a job that probably only pays about $150,000/year, alarm bells really go off all over the place ... because the return on that investment is ultimately going be huge, and it's not going to be obvious.
