A day after ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer criticized Colin Kaepernick’s decision to not stand for the national anthem, the 49ers quarterback responded after a 28-0 season-opening win over the Rams on Monday.

Dilfer has said Kaepernick’s job as a backup was to “be quiet, sit in the shadows and get the starter to play Week 1.” He claimed Kaepernick had caused “friction” that had “torn at the fabric of the team” by becoming the “center of attention.”

“I would ask him to really have a conversation with the families of people that have been murdered, and see if he still feels that way, because I’ll bet you he doesn’t. Just because he hasn’t experienced that type of oppression.”

Perspective seldom has been so firmly, painfully defined.

Often, the eyes and ears of Trent Dilfer have burned from criticism. Being an NFL quarterback can examine the manhood of a tough guy. Dilfer has persevered. In pro football reality, he is the Survivor. Rewards are evident.

Dilfer, 31, owns homes in Fresno, Calif., Seattle and at Lake Tahoe, Nev. He's worth millions, with a portfolio that includes a Ford dealership in the California agricultural town where a young man's talents blossomed at Fresno State.

But suddenly, on a warm and giddy California afternoon, while at Disneyland play, the Dilfer world was struck by devastating trauma. Cass and Trent's only son, a spirited 5-year-old, doubled over with something mysterious and terrible.

Saturday, Trevin died.

Kaepernick has posted 170 photos or videos on his Instagram account in the four years since he created it. Most of his first 128 posts were pics of him in football gear, publicity photos or shots taken with friends.

But 31 of his last 42 posts have strong social justice connotations, often featuring quotes from radical Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X, Black Panthers founder Huey Newton and cop killer Assata Shakur.

During a Sunday news conference about the flag flap, Kaepernick dressed in a black hat with a large, white “X” and a T-shirt that featured photos of Cuban despot Fidel Castro and Malcolm X.”

For anyone who didn't know, the original Black Panthers were a communist-revolutionary domestic terrorist group like Bill Ayers' Weather Underground and the Black Liberation Army. All were Maoist to be precise.
