I too have a ancestral connection to England and was soooo Happy for their freedom, the people spoke.
My maternal grand-mother was from England.
My mom was just 15 mo. old when she died during the “Great Flu Pandemic of 1918” at the age of 26.
So needless to say, we never heard her story and how she arrived in the US.
My mom was just 15 mo. old when she died....Not starting a war here, but....What?
I’m sorry you didn’t get to hear about it. Those stories can be a great family treasure.
My grandmother came over when she was 5 years old. She made the passage in May 1912. Everyone told her father that he was crazy to take his family across the Atlantic. The Titanic had just gone down the month before and the ocean was clearly too dangerous. My great-grandfather explained that it was, in fact, an unusually safe time to cross — everyone on ship (crew and passengers) were ceaselessly searching the horizon for danger. There weren’t going to be any surprises.
