Gary Johnson: 'What Is Aleppo?'

Gary Johnson, the Libertarian presidential candidate, does not know what Aleppo is.

Asked on Wednesday's "Morning Joe" what he would do if elected president about the city in Syria at the center of the refugee crisis, Johnson earnestly asked what Aleppo is even.

"And what is Aleppo?" Johnson said.

"You're kidding me," Mike Barnicle responded, who asked the question. Barnicle then began to explain what Aleppo is to the candidate.

"OK, got it, got it," Johnson cut him off, and then added, "With regard to Syria I do think it's a mess. I think that the only way that we deal with Syria is to join hands with Russia to diplomatically bring that at an end."

"It's just a mess," he said.

Yes.

What I don’t understand, is that I am about 2 or 3 Quadrillion miles away from being President and *I* know what Aleppo is. How is it that ANYONE running for President could not have gotten up to speed with the basic buzzwords? I mean really, it shows total lack of preparation and professionalism. Even if you’re not an expert, you can learn enough buzzwords to fool people. Make the effort. Fake it ‘til you make it.

WTF enters these people’s heads?

I don’t support Johnson, but there is just so much info a human can carry around in their brain. Media loves pulling this crap. I certainly don’t know what’s happening in every part on the world either and I’m pretty well read.

Gary Johnson may not know what “Aleppo” is but he can roll you a joint in 30 seconds flat - with one hand!

Syria is not an important issue for them. Legalized pot is.

Well that, and queer baby-killers.

Aleppo is not a gotcha question. The ignorance of basic geography is shocking.

Ah.....a “low information” Presidential candidate.

No thanks. One this century is plenty.

29 posts in and I still have no idea what the word means. Never heard it or saw it before. Reminded me of the canned dog food.

Antioch in Syria, to distinguish it from other ancient cities of that name, is now Antakya, Turkey.

I have to say, with all the crap going on with the fighting in Syria and the refugees, I don't remember reading or hearing the word Aleppo at all. Then again, I'm not running for president.

A quick wikipedia search even turned up a recent "Battle of Aleppo", but it still didn't ring a bell.

What the hell, I'll admit that if I were cornered with a "gotcha" question, I might have to think a few minutes before I remembered "Damascus" as a city in Syria.

Aleppo is a major city in northern Syria. Perhaps you know it by its Arabic name, Halab.
