A new CNN poll shows Republican Donald Trump has closed an 11-point gap with Democrat Hillary Clinton and leads her nationally in the race for the White House by two points.
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton start the race to November 8 on essentially even ground, with Trump edging Clinton by a scant two points among likely voters, and the contest sparking sharp divisions along demographic lines in a new CNN/ORC Poll.
Trump tops Clinton 45% to 43% in the new survey, with Libertarian Gary Johnson standing at 7% among likely voters in this poll and the Green Party's Jill Stein at just 2%.Among those likely to turn out in the fall, both candidates have secured about the same share of their own partisans (92% of Democrats back Clinton, 90% of Republicans are behind Trump) but independents give Trump an edge, 49% say they'd vote for him while just 29% of independent voters back Clinton.
Here's a key point from Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.
More @CNN #poll: Trump up 20% among Independents; has 90% of Republicans. His voters more excited than hers (OK, that's not breaking news)— Kellyanne Conway (@KellyannePolls) September 6, 2016
And he has this going for him:
A majority of Clinton's supporters say they're less excited about voting this year than usual (55%) while most of Trump's backers say they're more excited this time around (56%).
Trump is leading Clinton on the issues of the economy and terrorism, while Clinton beats him out on foreign policy and immigration. He also leads Clinton on trustworthiness 50 percent to 35 percent.
It's clear the recent campaign shakeup, Trump's trip to Mexico last week and Hillary Clinton's ongoing email scandal and Clinton Foundation woes are having a significant impact.
The poll makes perfect sense. The party breakdown you mentioned is for the overall sample of adults. The voting preference numbers you mentioned is for the sample of likely voters. Apples and oranges.
1. I find it amusing that Hillary’s leads are always significant or insurmountable, even when they’re small, while a Trump lead is always described as scant or temporary.
2. I wish Jill Stein had chosen Barney Frank for her running mate. I suspect that ticket would draw a lot of attention. What low-information voter wouldn’t be tempted to for Frank&Stein?
The Trip to Mexico was absolute genius.
Bet the phones are on fire this morning. Dems live and die by polls.
Pray America wakes
Katie is a stinker. This is her headline and not CNN’s, by the way. She was a Cruzbot, has remained one and does TRUMP no favors.
Can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to report anything as this, which is favorable for TRUMP, but she does have a paying job to do, so she sputters out an occasional fact against Hillary, but frames nothing that would be singularly very supportive of TRUMP.
She is always appears among the anti-Trump panelists.
That they do. Democrats do outnumber R’s on election day. Republicans have always won on their votes of Democrats and Independents.
So, the fake news has gone from trying to discourage Trump supporters to trying to light a fire under the Cankles supporters because they know how much she really trails by.
YOU SAID it!
“The trip to Mexico was absolute genius”!
So, strangely, this poll is flawed by oversampling R’s?!?!
The promise is that CNN despises TRUMP whatever smoke screen they put up, it’s design is solely to prop up Hillary and bury TRUMP. They are as cunning and devious as the Clinton Machine ever was in it’s hay day.
The general public is probably still largely ignorant of Hillary’s true position on immigration. While many Americans know that Hillary supports an insane 500% increase in Syrian refugee admissions, I’d bet most don’t know that she also supports a massive increase in overall legal immigration.
Anyone who supported the Gang of Eight bill, or anything like it, supports doubling legal immigration to over two million per year. Americans overwhelmingly oppose increasing legal immigration, but Democrats have never really been made to pay for being so out of touch with Americans and holding such extreme views. Unfortunately this is due largely to the GOP elite agreeing with the Democrats in wanting to increase the annual inflow of future Democrats, and so Americans have not been presented with a choice until (maybe) now. Trump has been a welcome change on immigration from Bush, McCain, and Romney, but even he hasn’t really hammered Hillary on holding views on increasing legal immigration that are so opposed to what Americans favor. Well, to be fair, he has hit her hard on the Syrian refugees, but not on overall legal immigration.
She never had it. The nefarious MSM is simply having a hard time selling its propaganda.
Based on their internal splits this is a D+5 sample. Somewhere around 36D/31R/33 IND
Nothing like a town distinguished for its own strain of Ebola.
It’s OVER!
TRUMP has a 20 point lead with INDEPENDENTS!!!!!!
Not sure Hillary can grow new voters as fast as Trump. How is the media going to stop the Trump train? The media controlled the masses to vote for Obama twice. Now other countries have no respect and Obama even apologized to them.
The media rides the new Hillary plane as long as they carry her water.
I think this race is entirely Trump’s to win or lose.
And he’s on the right path and trajectory right now.
They MUST be massaging the numbers! I can NOT believe the Cankster is anywhere NEAR as popular as the numbers CNN is claiming!!!!!
Nothing was blown. She was never ahead.
