“You say this but provide no example of a “Lie”? “

For the umpteenth time ....

He said he was pulled over. Video shows they were at a gas station.

“Again, a very very drunk man might well believe he had been sideswiped and pulled over. “

LOL! He didn’t look that drunk in the videos ...

It was a wonderful education in so many ways. :) We had two armed guards on one of our schoolbuses. When we came back to the states it was culture shock.

I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.

We agree on this, very likely. Which is why law enforcement and government in these places often doesn’t make sense to us, because it MAKES NO SENSE, it has a large amount of emotional BS.

The problem is, when we walk into that, we live in their stupid world of nonsense. I analogize it to walking into certain parts of Chicago. You can do it, but it is IMPERATIVE to realize you aren’t in Kansas anymore, even if it IS ostensibly a part of a major city in the United States of America. You have to conduct yourself differently, and have different expectations of things you will encounter, and the different outcomes.

It has to be the same when outside the USA as a citizen.

So far we have no proof of that

Sure the guard had a gun, was it at gun point? Only person saying that is the same drunk off his butt guy that created this whole BS story in the first place.

But hey, I am all for personal responsibility, Lochte, had absolutely no right to vandalize that property, nor his buddies. I am not going wash away the fact that he did something wrong, in a guest country, that you nor I would tolerate here. When you are a guest in a foreign country, you act on your very best behavior. Brazil isn’t the United States, you just don’t walk out of court with a $200 fine and court costs.

I don’t relate the two things, Fantasywriter, the principle appears to me to be quite different.

That poor person shot in the head could have happened in Stowe, Vermont or Cheyenne, WY. The person wasn’t doing anything wrong, was a victim of violence.

I think it is far less likely that the swimmer would have run into any problem if he hadn’t voluntarily committed an action that brought him to the attention of the people who detained and robbed them.

If you read my posts, you can see I am not defending the criminals who may or may not be part and parcel of any police or government force. I am pointing out that when in a foreign country, you have to conduct yourself quite differently than you might in America.

We had Filipino armed guards with M1 Garands patrolling our neighborhood at night in Subic Bay to watch for the “HUKs” (Filipino communists)

I wouldn’t trade them either, Trisham.

Well now I’m learning something. So if you take one wrong turn in Vermont, your vehicle gets “sprayed,” with bullets? A passenger gets hit in the head? The press suppresses the story completely?

My education is, evidently, just getting started.

we would call such a mistake "a lie"

Where did I say lie? For the record had he referenced "2nd and 3rd world pits" regardless of the language I wouldn't have said anything.

Where was Lochte during the two missing hours in his timeline?

Was he with the prostitutes as they claimed?

When you are not in the USA, our rules do not apply, no matter how stupid, oppressive, or nonsensical the rules of the host country are, they apply.

Yep.

Right or wrong, that is how it is, and it is well to keep it in mind when traveling.

Without a doubt.

In a foreign country, it is your word, against theirs. The question comes, what can you do about it? And do you think you can win? Which are all doubtful. The best to do is apologize, pay a fine, and get the heck out. Turning this into a pissing contest could end you up in a 3rd world prison. And no, their prisons don’t have air conditioning and premium cable television and 3 hots and cot either.

I would recommend, that if you ever do travel outside the boundaries of the United States, that you be on your best behavior and learn the customs and laws of the country you are visiting.

So you don’t end up like these fools.

This is friendly advice.

Doesn’t matter

You seem to think that American justice system means something to Brazil

It doesn’t

They can have all the stupid laws they want, you as a guest, has to follow those rules, even the unwritten ones.

Remember, it is you, the individual up against a corrupt country and its police force. Good luck with that

My best advice when traveling to these countries, don’t vandalize or destroy anything, even if you think it was “just a free sign” from the manufacturer or whatever. Don’t draw attention to your tourist butt and you won’t end up in trouble like these idiots.

Be smart, sometimes it is better to be smart then to be right in these countries.

Tijuana is one of those places somewhat in a class of its own, like Olongapo City, etc

Tijuana can't hold a candle (or a Balut) to Olongapo. If you do stupid crap in either and keep your head up your ass you will likely pay a similar price in both.

If you’re going to be a guest in a foreign country that may be known for shakedowns & shady justice, you had better be on your P’s & Q’s. “When in Rome........”

As much as you want to compare Brazil to the US justice wise, they are different species. If I go to Saudi Arabia & parade around in a see thru top with a liquor bottle in one hand, well color me shocked that their form of justice regarding me is going to be miles apart from US justice.

“When in Rome.....”
