It goes back, WAAAAAAAYYYYYY back to nearly the Civil War. Black people were used in ads for watermelons and fried chicken, in a very UN-PC manner, right on up to the Civil Rights era.

I used to have an old book THREE YEARS IN ARKANSAW in which a black woman is found to be apparently dead. No one would touch her to find out so they cooked up some fried chicken and passed it under her nose. Since she did NOT make a grab for it they concluded she was really dead.
