full statement as presented on BleachBit's website:
The IT team for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton used the open source cleaning software BleachBit to wipe systems "so even God couldnt read them," according to South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy on Fox News. His comments on the "drastic cyber-measure" were in response to the question of whether her emails were simply about "yoga and wedding plans."
BleachBit is mentioned at about three minutes into this video that aired live on the Fox News television station.
Rep. Gowdy told Fox News:
She and her lawyers had those emails deleted. And they didnt just push the delete button; they had them deleted where even God cant read them. They were using something called BleachBit. You dont use BleachBit for yoga emails or bridemaids emails. When youre using BleachBit, it is something you really do not want the world to see.
Perhaps Clinton's team used an open source application because, unlike proprietary applications, it can be audited, like for backdoors. In response to the Edward Snowden leaks in 2013, privacy expert Bruce Schneier advised, "Closed-source software is easier for the NSA to backdoor than open-source software," in an article in which he stated he also uses BleachBit. Ironically, Schneier was writing to a non-governmental audience.
@ThreatcoreNews compared the situation to the 18 minutes of audio erased from tapes from President Richard Nixon's Oval Office.
Last year when Clinton was asked about wiping her email server, she joked, "Like with a cloth or something?" It turns out now that BleachBit was that cloth.
As of the time of writing BleachBit has not been served a warrant or subpoena in relation to the investigation. BleachBit is free of charge to use in any environment whether it is personal, commercial, educational, or governmental, and the cleaning process is not reversible.
Immediately when the story broke this morning, traffic to the BleachBit web site and download servers spiked. As the story went viral on Twitter, a second, larger wave of traffic came to the site. The new servers are fully handling the loads.

Give a smart ass answer like that in court and the judge will charge you with contempt.
Can’t blame them, I’d do the same if I had the chance. It’s like an ammo company bragging that their bullet brought down an elephant or something, a testimony to the effectiveness of a legal product has no relationship to someone using it in an illegal way.
If I had bad stuff, and deleted it with this product, I bet the FBI could find it in 5 minutes.
I agree. It was another "In yo face, America!" moment for Clintoon. Al Capone would be proud.
Acttually, what hillary really needs these days is someone to wipe her ass for her.
Trump’s Justice Dept can use what Bleach-Bit is saying now for a prosecution next year >obstruction of justice.
EEEWWWW!!
Who bought it? Who ordered it?
Today’s version of what did they know and when did they know it!
Someone needs to ask the IT team - “...and just why, exactly, did you go to such lengths?” Because if you were just removing routine family emails, why go to all the trouble. If you knew they were something else, something more, well, that’s an admission of destroying evidence in a felony level espionage case.
That is a good question. Who and When did this copy of the software get downloaded? Was it downloaded after the subpoena? At whose direction? WHO DID THE WIPING?
(I know this isn’t going anywhere but... good questions non the less)
Heh, heh, heh! [In my best Fred Flintstone voice]
The in-your-face bit also comes in when she jokes about using snapchat since the messages delete themselves.
Nixon was crucified for less.
That is a great ad for them though. It’s an open source product anyway.
Took Snowden’s advice on encryption, too:

No one believes that the copies on Hillary’s server drive was the only copy that exists.
Surely they have other means to recover them.
Immediately subpoena Bleachbit corporate records.
Aw hell, just go with CCleaner. It’s free and thorough.
those emails had to go to another server somewhere. find those on the receiving end , check those servers for the emails received from hillair Clinton . the trail just couldn’t stop at her server. put a reward out for those receiving servers. what the heck . THINK IT THROUGH !
