Colin Kaepernick, who has been mired in a quarterback controversy with Blaine Gabbert to see who will lead the 49ers this season, may have sparked a real controversy Friday night.
Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem before the 49ers preseason game at Levi's Stadium, although the move went unnoticed by most at the time. ProFootballTalk.com reported the story more than an hour after the game, and no reporters asked Kaepernick about it following the 49ers 21-10 loss to the Packers.
But Kaepernick's action prompted the 49ers to issue a statement acknowledging that he sat during the anthem, and defending his right to do so.
The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," reads the statement. "It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.
That stance will not sit well with many fans, however, and Kaepernick is sure to hear the boos in opposing stadiums as the media shines the spotlight on his decision. Was Kaepernick, who has been outspoken on his Twitter account about racial issues in the U.S., making a political statement? Expect to hear much more on this story in the coming days.
He is losing his job but still needs attention.
A lot of good people have died defending this nation so that this crybaby can make millions playing a game. He wouldn’t make a good living doing anything else because he’s an idiot.
He’s on his way out. Maybe he just needed the attention so he could become a cause, like the homosexual players, who get their 15 minutes of attention and then are forgotten. He will be forgotten, too.
I share some of your points of view... I guess the unraveling is coming ... how blessed it was to grow up in post WW2 America. It was truly the pinnacle of American greatness, and expressing love for your country was a shared value.
I’ve seen no mention of it anywhere yet on the interwebs, but in the post-game press conference, it appeared (at least to me) that Kaepernick was sporting a t-shirt featuring black and white photos of the meeting of Fidel Castro and Malcolm X. Wonder how well his antics would go in Fidel’s gulags.
If it wasn’t for the men and women of all colors who sacrfice this clown wouldnt be making millions of dollars to riding the pine.
It is why I oppose a Flag Burning Amendment. You cannot destroy the fundamental principles enshrined by our Founding Fathers. Why give the arsonist the opportunity for a show trial? Instead it should be met with derision, accompanied by the words "you poor fool." (Or as in one case, "you're on fire, stupid") As with the GOPe, it is illustrative of who is whom.
That said, unless it is their own property, an arson charge would be most fitting. Then there is the whole issue of Fighting Word, which should include acts as well as words themselves.
Could be interesting and divisive if this spreads to locker rooms and high schools across this country.

I doubt it. Kaepernick is just a POS that wants to bring attention to himself.
If a lot of teams started doing that sort of BS, they would find a lot of the fans that support and fund their asses wouldn’t be gone. Their game would be up.
Another article reveals what an utter jerk this guy is:
Frankly, it’s gotten so high school games are the most enjoyable.
Agreed! Wholeheartedly.
Says it all that the Niners tried to give Kaepernick away and no other NFL team wanted him.
I agree, but there is this odd story
That is why I coach Pony baseball and help coach football.
Voters approve nation’s most expensive high school football stadium
I hope this prick blows out a knee and is concussed on the same play and his career ends.
Yep, he’s obviously decided to blame America because he can no longer get away with coasting on his over rated ‘talent’. What’s the name of his replacement? Gabbert or something like that.
No NFL team wanted to pay what the Niners were asking ... Kaepernick's contract with the Niners is substantial ... combine that with character issues and his questionable QB skill set and his appeal factor diminishes to zero.
Yes, Gabbert, and “Kap’s” best days were with Harbaugh, who is long gone. Niners should just cut him, contract and all, but the Yorks are clueless.
He can sit if he wants. This is a PR disaster for Colin, NFL,and the 49ers. He just crapped on all of them along with the country.
