Colin Kaepernick, who has been mired in a quarterback controversy with Blaine Gabbert to see who will lead the 49ers this season, may have sparked a real controversy Friday night.
Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem before the 49ers preseason game at Levi's Stadium, although the move went unnoticed by most at the time. ProFootballTalk.com reported the story more than an hour after the game, and no reporters asked Kaepernick about it following the 49ers 21-10 loss to the Packers.
But Kaepernick's action prompted the 49ers to issue a statement acknowledging that he sat during the anthem, and defending his right to do so.
The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," reads the statement. "It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.
That stance will not sit well with many fans, however, and Kaepernick is sure to hear the boos in opposing stadiums as the media shines the spotlight on his decision. Was Kaepernick, who has been outspoken on his Twitter account about racial issues in the U.S., making a political statement? Expect to hear much more on this story in the coming days.
And you should lighten up....N00B.
The 49ers defended his actions. They can go f*** themselves too. I get your point about being shown the door.
Of course the organization would play it off. They
want to pedal Kaepernick to other teams so they are
willing to pretend they are tolerant of his outbursts.
Privately somebody has to be telling him to stop
pissing in own boots if he expects a future in the NFL.
Trying to ruin the game.
It brings to mind a great line from Andy Griffith’s What It Was Was Fooball:........... “A bunch of these men trying to run that punkin’ from one end of that cow pasture to th’ other, without either getting knocked down or steppin’ in something.”
That’s The best I can remember it, but every lover of football should listen to it to remind themselves what the game is REALLY all about!
PS I was a Dugout Mom, Soccer Mom, Scorekeeper, and everything else for two boys and a girl who played all the sports there were to play. I believe sports builds character.
“Find something else to do with your time.”
Fencing is a great sport and martial art.
It could be interesting to see Colin’s first snap. Wonder if the offensive line might accidentally take a knee for a down.
“Lets hope theres something to the karma theory - for both CK and the 49ers organization.”
Well, sin has consequences, and that’s no theory.
At least we know they are always trying their best to win in high school and we are spared the theatrics and egomaniacs. The high school games are really more exciting, I think.
“Pro-ball will EVENTUALLY die suddenly. Deservedly so.”
Many of us played in school. The game is part of our lives and our culture.
The excellence demonstrated on the field is not without value.
That said, they really need to install a scumbag filter.
Amen, brother, and I extend that to MLB, the NBA, and just about all professional sports. Overpaid, pampered little darlings undeserving of the adulation they engender.
Only the ignorant act like the CK/49ers and their bosses.
Well it is the Bay Area of Commiefornia.
“The way I look at it when one has a “right” to do something, one also has a right not to do it.”
Hey, don’t overlook the stupid and the evil.
I wonder if the 49er’s would have had the same reaction (the person has the right to speak their mind) if he had stated an opinion that transgender people don’t have the right to use the bathroom of their choice.
I’m guessing not
