I'd say the point is that the media ran with a supposedly false narrative initially because it was sexy, then they got an even sexier narrative with a real villain so they ran with that. In neither case did they do basic fact checking. Facts could only hurt the salaciousness of the story.
In other words, the big network news operations and the major newspapers are no better than Perez Hilton, TMZ, or a supermarket tabloid now.
