My first ccw instructed us, if we must shoot, to yell “Help! I’m being attacked!” no matter the situation.
Any witnesses will back up the story that you were acting in defense.

My ccw instructor said yell as loudly as possible - ‘STOP, STOP or I will shoot’
At that point, anything other than the other person backing up or stopping in his tracks can be construed as aggressive intent. At that point, fire at will.
I’ve done a bit of joking here.
If you shoot a perp ... immediately make two phone calls. First to your lawyer - then to 911 and report the shooting. Remember to repeat ‘I was in fear for my life’ - that should be your mantra to the police. Say as little as possible to the police until your lawyer shows up and can take charge of the situation.
