Detroit was the country's fourth largest city in 1940 and the fifth in 1950 with a population of over 1.8 million. By all accounts it was one of the wealthiest cities in America.

Today, it is notable for being the only American city to grow to over 1 million and later fall below that mark and the only major American city to file for bankruptcy. The last time Detroit elected a Republican mayor was 1958.

In the 1950’s if Detroit was one of the wealthiest cities in America (it was) then it was one of the wealthiest cities in the entire world.

It's kind of like certain people are programmed to self-destruct.
