Should We Be Having Kids In The Age Of Climate Change?
4:36 August 18, 201611:09 AM ET Heard on All Things Considered
Standing before several dozen students in a college classroom, Travis Rieder tries to convince them not to have children. Or at least not too many.
He's at James Madison University in southwest Virginia to talk about a "small-family ethic" to question the assumptions of a society that sees having children as good, throws parties for expecting parents, and in which parents then pressure their kids to "give them grandchildren."
Why question such assumptions? The prospect of climate catastrophe.
For years, people have lamented how bad things might get "for our grandchildren," but Rieder tells the students that future isn't so far off anymore.
He asks how old they will be in 2036, and, if they are thinking of having kids, how old their kids will be.
"Dangerous climate change is going to be happening by then," he says. "Very, very soon."

If you believe the earth is warming.. then YES!
Huge vast areas of Siberia will become habitable and cultivatable, huge areas of Canada will become agrarian centers, we will need a lot more people for that.
The whole African continent will thrive, with increased precipitation, sorely needed rain that will bring back the rain forests and vegetation that used to be in the Saharan desert.
They will need more people for that. (And they can keep them over there. no need to migrate over here)
Unfortunately, if Russian scientists are right, we are heading for about 30 years of cold weather that will bring famine and misery to people. But even then...
The weak will die and the duty of the survivors will be to reproduce and have as many kids as possible to ensure the surviving genes thrive :)
Anybody who believes in global warming should not be having kids.
Jimmy U. is not is Southwest Virginia!
6. CO2 makes up only .039% of the atmosphere.
Why doesn’t this feminine Travis Rieder just off HIMSELF in the name of “climate change?”
I suggest the following solution. If you believe anthropomorphically-driven global warming is destroying the climate and the world, you should get sterilized before having any children. If you believe climate change is driven by changes in the sun and in the earth’s magnetic field and that the proper term is Glow-Bull Warming, you should have four children instead of two children. The result will be that the logic-damaged leftist loons will largely die out thus saving the planet.
Actually, I was thinking, “If all the liberals would just go dive off the nearest overpass, that would help tremendously”...
Travis Rieder not only should not have children but he should go jump into a pit of hungry tigers immediately.
The tigers then should be give some tums because this kind of crazy is bound to upset their digestion.
Should we allow an unlimited stream on immigrants into out country? Won’t they only breed an spoil the earth?
Environmentalists should open up free sterilization services for their people. That would be a good step forward.
I join my voice in the chorus of those who wish this author success, in that all those who are idiot enough to follow and believe such nonsense, should by all means halt any reproduction. We do not need them, and they will be better off extinct. There, I said it.
For those who ask the question...”No”. and for the rest of us...”have at it.”
Well two men can’t reproduce anyway.
I have six children and climate change had nothing at all to do with them being born.
Good question to ask those living in the LBJ Plantations.
In our own time the whole of Greece has been subject to a low birth-rate and a general decrease of the population, owing to which cities have become deserted and the land has ceased to yield fruit, although there have neither been continuous wars nor epidemics.
If, then, anyone had advised us to send and ask the gods about this, and find out what we ought to say or do, to increase in number and make our cities more populous, would it not seem absurd, the cause of the evil being evident and the remedy being in our own hands?
For as men had fallen into such a state of pretentiousness, avarice, and indolence that they did not wish to marry, or if they married to rear the children born to them, or at most as a rule but one or two of them, so as to leave these in affluence and bring them up to waste their substance, the evil rapidly and insensibly grew.
For in cases where of one or two children the one was carried off by war and the other by sickness, it is evident that the houses must have been left unoccupied, and as in the case of swarms of bees, so by small degrees cities became resourceless and feeble.
About this it was of no use at all to ask the gods to suggest a means of deliverance from such an evil. For any ordinary man will tell you that the most effectual cure had to be mens own action, in either striving after other objects, or if not, in passing laws making it compulsory to rear children.
-Polybius. circa 150 BC
I think this article is an example of the “pretentiousness, avarice, and indolence” that Polybius wrote of.
Yeah but... I’m 68 and plan on no more kids. :-)
Good grief. Maybe they will next decide to blow up the sun. Oh, maybe not since they do not acknowledge that the sun is the earth’s energy engine. So, why blame the sun for the thawing of the ice age? Everyone knows that Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble and their wives caused it all.
liberals should stop having kids immediately!
