Louisiana flooding is the country’s ‘worst natural disaster’ since Hurricane Sandy, Red Cross says
Washington Post ^ | August 17 | Emma Brown, Ashley Cusick and Mark Berman

After two feet of rain began falling Thursday night, water rose quickly in Baton Rouge and then migrated east and south, leaving a vast swath of damage. At least 40,000 homes have been damaged, according to Gov. John Bel Edwards (D). The death toll has risen to 13.

Roads remain flooded and closed, while schools, businesses and government offices have been shut down for days. The country has not seen a natural disaster this bad since 2012, when Hurricane Sandy pummeled the East Coast, according to the American Red Cross.

“The current flooding in Louisiana is the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy,” Brad Kieserman, vice president for disaster services operations and logistics for the Red Cross, said in a statement. “The Red Cross is mounting a massive relief operation, which we anticipate will cost at least $30 million and that number may grow as we learn more about the scope and magnitude of the devastation.”

Many scrambling to escape the water or witnessing the chaos from afar have wondered why the flooding has not gotten more widespread national attention. William W. Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), referred to those concerns at a news briefing in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, but he assured residents that the federal government was deeply aware of the scope of what happened.

...

he number of those stranded and still needing rescue “was next to impossible to say,” said Mike Steele, a spokesman for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, “and it’s changing every minute.”

Teams are going to search as many as 30,000 homes and buildings in at least five parishes over the next two weeks, said ... state fire marshal, whose office is coordinating the urban search and rescue effort.

Good question. Why isn’t Obama being pilloried, the way Bush was lambasted by liberals and the media over Hurricane Katrina????

Posted this earlier in a mostly dead thread. Anyone have any news on this?

"Just checked the LSU fall schedule and orientation for various categories of students has been going on last week and this week. A 31,000 student campus and classes start Monday the 22nd.

Most students would normally be on campus at this point. Anyone heard any news about how the flood might have affected the LSU campus?"

John Bel signed over authority to the Feds right away. During Katrina Kathleen let the people die in order to make a political statement

I believe this is true, even if the Red Cross is the source.

Remind me about the media and how it got down of G W Bush after Katrina........Oh, that was deserved because Bush was a Republican President and the Democrats in the state wanted to make this a political issue. This is a Democratic President involved with the same state's natural disaster and a Democratic Governor not wanting to make it a political issue.

Obama playing golf at least keeps him from signing bad laws or bad executive orders.

I agree and this little episode will bite Bel Edwards in the ass like like it did to Blanco.

Both LSU and the Federal Courts are planning to be back on a full schedule starting Monday; the University was closed Monday and Tuesday of this week, as I understand primarily because of staffing issues:

LSU will be partially open Wednesday through Friday:

Intersession term will continue.
The Hebert Law Center and School of Veterinary Medicine will open for classes Wednesday, but all other academic units will be closed including Middleton and Hill Memorial Libraries.
Deans’ offices and the Office of Academic Affairs will be open.
The Lab School and Child Care Center will remain closed through Sunday, Aug 21.
All other employees will be contacted by their supervisors if they are required to report to work.

Very little media attention on this disaster. Trump being there will bring attention and donations. Does the Governor not want people to learn about flooding and donate?
