thanks
The crew did a great job. Those cable barriers on ships are amazing, but dangerous as hell. The crew on the deck have serious intestinal fortitude, and I’m sorry to hear of their injuries.
Barriers are dangerous animals, both on ship and ground. We had a F4 land with an in-flight emergency and his hook missed the barrier. He powered up to come back around, but the barrier was engaged and stopped the plane dead in the air. It put both wheels through the wings and totaled the aircraft. The pilot survived, though he was severely injured.
See the video below:
BTW, John Birch, an American missionary in China helped crashed members of that raiding party escape from Japanese capture.
The Chinese Communists later killed John Birch. The John Birch Society was named after this man.
"The John Birch Society (JBS) is, in its own words, a conservative advocacy group supporting anti-communism and limited government.[2][3][4] It has been described as a radical right and far-right organization.[5][6][7][7][8]
Its what they are trained to do. They did it well.
All things considered, one would still need a specialist for the seatcushionectomy required after an event like this.
Thank you Right Wing Assault. I tried to see anything that pointed at human error but it escaped me.
Now THAT’S my Navy!
Seriously though, great flying. As others have noted, SOP is for pilots to go full throttle as the wheels touch down - just in case of a missed cable or a broken cable as happened here. That was a bad one though 'cause it apparently broke *after* having arrested a lot of their speed. Much easier to deal with if it snaps right away. They had just the right touch on the controls and just enough airspeed to coax the aircraft back into the air. Hope no-one on deck was seriously injured. Broken cables happen. Everyone knows it, but they still catch some people.
Snappy salute to you, mad_as_he$$ for the information. Explains fully your earlier comment. I love this place! Warmest regards to all.
Yes, I agree..but the keyword is “training”. The throttle will be at full immediately after touchdown and the canted deck prevents collision with other aircraft on the flight deck. Good show by the crew for not panicking and attempting an eject.
Ping!
I don’t know much about the cables, but maybe there was an internal break a visual inspection couldn’t see. Do they do any kind of ultra sound or x-ray inspections on them?
I can’t imagine being near one when it cuts loose. Looks as if the one guy came within inches of being decapitated.
Great article, very informative!
Yes it is. I sent M. Mabeus an email letting her know how nice it was to find a real journalist these days.
No “seats”?
When you are out of options.....
I love you.
