Germany remains a safe country with a strong police force, with well-organized security agencies We are good [at security], but we want to be better.
Germanys interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, has recently unveiled a long list of anti-terror measures: thousands of new police officers, billions of euros for the security services, better cyber intelligence and faster deportation of foreign criminals.
This was, of course, in one sense about reassuring the German public. It is not the first time the government has announced anti-terror measures. But it is also the response to what are thought to have been the first terror attacks on German soil inspired by so-called Islamic State (IS). [ ]
Recent polls suggest around three quarters of Germans are worried by the threat of terror. The co-author of one study, Prof. Manfred Schmidt from Heidelberg University, was quoted as saying: People used to worry about money, health and the environment. This has been replaced by terrorism and extremism.

We had some episode in Wiesbaden over the weekend...couple in the city park around midnight and some apparent immigrant punks chose to rob them....German guy put up a fight and got hurt a fair bit. Still got robbed.
In the Koln episode from 31 Dec, I don’t know of too many German guys who put up some fight.
I think the past couple of decades have been some infusion of expecting society to conform. So most guys aren’t expecting trouble and I think are in a stage of denial when they first observe trouble.
From the late 70s when I first did a tour in Germany to around 2010....there wasn’t a street or area in Germany that I would avoid or skip. Today, I can show you two areas of Frankfurt that aren’t safe....day or night. Lack of cop attention and acceptance of the city council to allow behavior to go this direction. Go look up the Riga neighborhood of Berlin and read up on it’s issues. Those aren’t even immigrants or migrants....just far left-wing radicals who took over the neighborhood. In virtually every case....cops needed to bulk up and act aggressive and they skipped that stage. We are at some point where Germans question safety and security. Just hiring cops won’t fix the problem.
Muzzies, leftists, skinheads, new nazis, nazis, conservative, anti immigration, PRO immigration, pro unfettered immigration!! Pro deportation of criminals Pro deportation of all!!
Which of these groups really exist and how powerful are they and how long before this comes to a head?
No rush in getting back to me as i’ve asked too much!!
Good for the German guy for fighting back!!
I got beat up by three or more guy on more than one occasion. I wish I had a good Jean Claude Van Damme story for you but truth is i got my A@@ kicked every time!!
One on one I was good.
Three on one is for the movies.
Though I did see one guy beat up 6 guys, but he was a steroid psycho beating up high metalheads :)
The germans are good at arresting anyone who says mean things about muzz slimes. Dealing with the jihadis, not so much.
Germany was ok until the muzzards came. Kick them out and it will be ok again.
This question really is a decent question and rarely do any journalists sit and ask...how many radical Muslims, radical leftists, neo-Nazis, Pegida (new anti-immigrant crowd from eastern Germany), crime gangs, etc....exist?
From this crowd of roughly three million Muslims in Germany (the original crowd of Turks, the Kurds, the refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc)...the German cops will say they probably watching in some fashion around 10,000 to 15,000. Two years ago, there were probably 300 punks a month who were jumping on a plane to fly into the Syrian war and be some ISIS thug. That recruitment has gone downhill since their stories came back and a lot of people lost interest real quick. They might talk 50 a month to leave Germany these days. The general fact is that most of the radical crowd all live in highly urbanized areas (Koln, Dusseldorf, Berlin, etc). You go to a rural area or small town.....zero radicalized thugs in the neighborhood.
Radical leftists? It’s again an urban thing. You won’t find any of these in small towns or rural areas. Berlin has the Riga neighborhood and probably around a 1,000 thugs in the whole city who fit that profile. Hamburg might have a couple hundred who fit the profile. But over all of Germany? Probably less than 5,000.
The skin-heads? Cops will say it’s a big deal mostly in eastern Germany. Here in the Hessen area, it’s barely noticeable. It’s generally accepted that if you are a 18-year old skin-head, then your parents and grandparents were leaning that direction long before you. If you watch the news segments, there are a fair number of guys who aren’t real skin-heads, but some of the political stances of the group attract them (anti-immigrant).
Pegida? This was a group created out of thin air in Dresden....using social media (Facebook) and got hyped up because of the immigration woes. They talk a lot and have a march occasionally....but never really formed up as a political group. I’d take a guess that 300,000 Germans will say they are enthusiasts of Pegida. Cops just watch them but they just make speeches and march....nothing else.
Crime gangs? There are basically three varieties. The African or Moroccan gangs run the drug trade in most urban German regions (like Koln). I would take a guess that around 10,000 of them fit into the drug trade as it is in Germany today. The second group are the Eastern European small crime guys....Bulgaria, Romania, Gypsies, etc. They do break-ins, pick-pocket activity, and phone snatches. Then you have the heavy players....mostly some Turk gangs and Russian mafia. Car theft, jewelry shop theft, ATM exploitation (they blow up the ATM machines), etc. If you were looking for Syrians or Iraqis in crime...you just won’t find it.
New book came out this weekend by the chief of the union for German cops. He basically lays out the issue that they’ve been called to be this giant multi-task organization and they can’t see how it’ll work successfully. Massive hiring deal is underway....thousands of more cops to be hired over the next year. But part of the issue will involve Judges actually enforcing the law and sending a guy off...something hasn’t happened in the past. Same deal with city councils or political folks wanting no action on certain groups. And he points out....this anti-populism tone by the news media and some political folks....is simply trying to make people stay quiet. This just drives frustrations to a more intense level where cops are the only mechanism left to protect the public.
It is still like a Disney-land park and fairly safe. I can walk out of my house at midnight and feel 100-percent safe in the village. Most streets in Wiesbaden are 100-percent safe. I can ID two areas of Frankfurt to avoid but the majority of Frankfurt is absolutely safe. Terrorism is that one odd factor that you can’t be sure about anymore. Just some nutcase on a train....who might go off one day? Or some jihad loser going nuts one day? That’s the statistical thing you think about.
For years in my village of 4,000 people....never a stolen car. For 2015, roughly sixteen stolen cars....all upper scale BMW, Audi type. One theft caught before crossing the Czech border....the rest never solved. Locals notice this type of thing now.
The thing is....you have to really look at what you are being told and if it’s factual or some gimmick state-run TV news fraud. The public confidence in the news being told is at an all-time low. This hurts politicians, journalists, and sets up elections for some really radical changes.
If you live in the United States of America, your government is following exactly the same program.
You sound like a guy who knows Germany extremely well. Thanks for all the valuable info.
I write a blog over Germany...you can google it Schnitzel Republic. I cover the whole spectrum, business to crime, and politics.
You took time and diligence to write this and I shall read it and enjoy it tonight when I can REALLY read it.
I shall respond to you and I thank you.
Thanks for your posts on the subject.
Actually gives me a lot of hope that things can be stopped and maybe even reversed in parts of Europe.
Excellent article worthy of a magazine or newspaper.
What you said about walking around at night rung a bell.
I could walk around these italian neighborhoods at 3am with no problem, and honestly, if it wasn’t for the news, I wouldn’t know the world is on fire, especially since i dont work in Manhattan anymore and dont see the decay debasio has brought to it.
The random terror attack? Always a possibility.
Germany has some TOUGH decisions to make and needs to coalesce around a strong and practical leader.
It’s understood that merkel thinks the Germans NEED the population of immigrants to stay relevant, as no one is having kids. How true is that
