OTTAWA — Canada’s last destroyer will be taken out of service in the spring, leaving the country’s navy reliant on allies for longer-range air defence for at least the next seven years.
HMCS Athabaskan, and similar destroyers, provided command and control capabilities over the years for the Royal Canadian Navy as well as what was called area air defence.
But Athabaskan, Canada’s last destroyer, will be taken out of service within the next year, most likely in the spring, Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd, the new commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, told Postmedia Wednesday.
Canada’s warships still have the capability to protect themselves from direct, incoming air threats but will have to rely mainly on U.S. ships to deal with missiles and aircraft at longer ranges.
“We won’t be able to fill that long-range air defence gap,” Lloyd said. “You would be looking at your U.S. long-range air defence platforms for that coalition support as we go forward.”
The RCN won’t have that air defence capability back until about 2024 when the first of the new Canadian Surface Combatants is expected to be in the water.

Trump is right. Canada isn’t pulling their weight. Their subs are laid up and their helo fleet is Shiite. They rely on USCG for SAR.

I now know why there is such passion from them. They know he is a pay to play when it comes to out-sourcing the US military for other country’s defence.

That rust bucket was launched in 1970. 46 years old. Recent history include equipment malfunctions, cracks in the hull, sailors being arrested for drug and gun offenses, sexual assaults, fuel spills in Halifax Harbor, “the flagship vessel in the navy’s East Coast fleet”, so says the RCN.
Canada is nothing but a target rich environment without Uncle Sam protecting their socialist asses.

Well if those dunderheards in Ottawa had any sense at all, they would do exactly that. We’ve got enough ships mothballed to equip most any third world country and then some, and Canada certainly qualifies for that, and it would take a damn sight less time than waiting until 2024.
This is what Trump is talking about....our “allies” need to start paying their “fair share” of defense to borrow a dim talking point.
