Mary Knowlton arrived at the Punta Gorda, Fla., police station Tuesday night to learn how to be a community steward.
The 73-year-old was there as a student in the citizen police academy, a two-hour course intended to give an intimate look at what makes the department in the quaint Florida town work.
On this night, the group of 35 would tour the station and talk with officers, an essential part of academy curriculum that has gained popularity across the country amid a heated national debate about police violence.

This is a total screw up,Safe weapon is always step 1
Note to self: When role playing with cops, NEVER play the bad guy.
We can file this one with the video of the cop that shot himself while trying to demonstrate gun safety in a public school classroom.
Not being a thread nanny here. That was yesterday, this is today, that was the New York Daily News, this is the Washington Compost.
It had 110 comments, that's all. Might be of interest, might not. YMMV.
They weren’t using blue/red guns? The old lady’s estate is going to own that police department.
That program includes class work, on-site visits and facility tours and is meant to develop future leaders through well informed and civically engaged residents, according to the website.
Never “play” anything when real weapons are involved.
Or the dog.
I am not commenting on what happened below, just the waste of such a program in the first place.
This is more than likely liberal classes/programs.
Put citizens in the path of danger to make it easier for cops.
Disarm the citizens is an added bonus.

Mind boggling - firearm safety 101 was ignored. No excuses.
:-D
I saw this from a distance yesterday, didn’t hear the details, and was wondering why overnight and today there was nothing in the Tampa news about it.
It appears the media covering for cops having the only guns again.
Let me guess. The cop unloaded his weapon by racking the slide and THEN removing the magazine. There shouldn’t have been even one live round in the building if shoot/don’t shoot simulations were planned. Not. One. Live. Round.
“Note to self: When role playing with cops, NEVER play the bad guy.”
Note to you: When role playing with cops, NEVER play the good guy.
"Or the dog."
Or the good guy.
“nothing in the Tampa news about it.”
I heard about it on Tampa Radio
“Let me guess. The cop unloaded his weapon by racking the slide and THEN removing the magazine. There shouldnt have been even one live round in the building if shoot/dont shoot simulations were planned. Not. One. Live. Round.”
There shouldn’t have been even one functional gun in the room. You DON’T role play with real, functional guns.
Why would there be live ammo in a demonstration class?
