Alvaro Ybarra Zavala puts it bluntly: Venezuela has become hell.
The photographer had just returned from one of his latest trips to the South American nation when he talked to TIME, and he was visibly affected by the chaos he had witnessed there. Theres a complete collapse of society, he said.
Once an example for the continent, Venezuela is now a country in freefall. Its hard to find food, theres no medicine, said Ybarra Zavala. If you have to have surgery, you need to bring everything with you: the bandages, the gloves, everything. There are no anesthetics.
Ybarra Zavala was on assignment for TIME last month, chronicling the countrys breakdown. His photographs show daily street protests that are often violently repressed, empty shelves in deserted grocery stores and people lining up, sometimes for entire days, for gas. No one believes anymore in the army, in the police, in the system, said Ybarra Zavala.
The photographer - whos worked in Iraq, Afghanistan and Colombia - said Venezuela is the hardest place Ive worked in.
The collapse, set in motion by Hugo Chavezs 14-year reign, now seems irreversible, he adds: For the last four years, Venezuela has been in constant crisis and it never blew up. But now, Im very scared of how it will end. I think Venezuela crossed the line of no return. Im worried what will happen next.

The Saudi welfare state is also supported by oil revenues.
I wonder what the (reported) unemployment rate is in Venezuela, it’s gotta be like 2-3% or lower now? Is that how things will be here in the US when ours gets that low under Hillary?
Never put all your eggs in one basket.
...and that dead commie a-hole’s daughter is worth several billion US dollars.
And were ten years behind them .
This is, of course, exactly what the left wants to happen here. Then they will restructure the USA in their wet dream of a Marxist society.
Current President Nicholas Carudo is the worst President in years, even more autocratic than Hugo Chavez ever was. On top of everything else, Venezuela has endured a drought, the worst in years. Things are so bad, most animals in the Caracas zoo have starved. No one has ever seen anything like this. This could become a massive humanitarian crisis.
There are a lot of good people who opposed both Chavez and Carudo who are caught in this and they deserve our sympathy.
Send every American professor and journalist down there.

I am friends with one here in AZ who managed to get out.

You must live in a friggin’ sh*thole if you’re expecting to wait in line for TP and eat your pets.
Danny Glover could buy them quite a lot of medicine if he
would give back the 20 million dollars he stole from
Venezuela for the movie he was paid for and never delivered.

Been saying that for years now.
If you read the article, the writer is still very sympathetic to socialism in the face of incontrovertible evidence of it’s failure.
As the last line indicates, he blames the failure on “popularism”, not socialism (or Marxism).
Looking at those two in the picture, the word that comes to my mind is where pork comes from. Both Communist pigs.
