Could House Speaker Paul Ryan Follow Eric Cantor Into Political Oblivion?
The New American ^ | Bob Adelmann | 05 August 2016

A dark horse who appeared out of the Wisconsin woodwork, businessman Paul Nehlen, was reportedly neck-and-neck with House Speaker Paul Ryan (shown) in the primary polls taken in early July. Pundits pooh-poohed those polls as being unreliable, but Ryan has since adjusted his primary campaign strategy to keep the public from asking him “unscripted” questions, queries that Nehlen keeps raising. Ryan doesn’t want to become another Eric Cantor, the former House Majority Leader who lost to a nobody in 2014.

Nehlen suddenly became a national figure and symbol of the country’s populist uprising on Tuesday when Donald Trump turned Ryan’s words into a quasi-endorsement of Nehlen. Back in May, when asked if he was ready to endorse Donald Trump for the presidency, Ryan waffled: “I’m just not ready to do that at this point. I’m not there right now.” Trump trumpeted his response immediately

Has a Speaker of the House ever lost a primary election?

I don't think so.

This could be a first.

Ryan is heavily favored in his district and most people there like him and dislike the other guy - just saying.

It would be awesome to be rid of this open borders weasel.

As much as I would love to see him retire to the dem fields; they have an open primary there which means his main constituents, dems, will vote for him.

I’d really to be proven wrong though...

The irony of have a RINO house speaker is really too much to bear though.

It would have been a lot easier if Trump didn’t endorse Lyin’ Ryan. It would have been a shoo-in if Trump endorsed Nehlen. (sp?)

“most people there like him and dislike the other guy”

Comments like that usually just reflect the poster’s own opinion and have nothing to do with what “most people” think. Just saying.

Not really.

1) Trump endorses Nehlen, Nehlen wins. Hooray!

2) Trump endorses Nehlen, Nehlen loses. Speaker of the House is now a very public political enemy who has a lot of control over President Trump's legislative agenda.

3) Trump endorses Ryan, Ryan wins. Trump has some clout with Ryan and who now owes Trump a favor or two.

4) Trump endorses Ryan, Ryan loses. Trump doesn't have to deal with the weasel and has drawn the ire (such as it may be) of a freshman congressman from Wisconsin.

Endorsing Nehlen is the riskiest of all four possibilities.

Here’s hoping Nehlen kicks Ryan out. Ryan does all he can to injure veterans.

Democrats are organizing to vote against Ryan in the primary. They dislike his support for TPP and the privatization of SS. I don’t know how many people will take part in this but you can find their plans all over the lib blogosphere.

I heard on the national snooze last Friday that Ryan was up huge in the polls. Don’t know how accurate that report was.

What's your opinion of Trump not even having a rally in Wisconsin until after the primary is over? As in, not taking either side? Now that I think about it, I guess not endorsing anyone would be an endorsement for the challenger. and would mean the same reactions as you gave.

5) Trump endorses Ryan, both win their elections. Trump tells Nehlen “Now that I’m President, I’m free to endorse you in 2018. Stay ready”.

5th. Trump waited until the primary vote and pumped hard for the primary winner to help them win in November and he has a supporter in the house.

Include McCain on that one.

Manafort too old school.

Not to worry. To deem from Nehlen's press releases he seems to be an excellent person. On the endorsement this is what he had to say:

"Bottom Line: In endorsing Mr. Ryan on Friday night during his speech in Green Bay, Mr. Trump proved he’s the leader we need to unite the Republican Party and win in November."

"He [Trump] needs to squash Hillary. And I need to beat Ryan. Because if Clinton and Ryan are elected in November, Ryan will rubber stamp Hillary’s agenda in January. That said…"

"Media reports claiming Donald Trump “flip-flopped” by endorsing Ryan are simply not true and a perfect example of the dishonesty Mr. Trump has talked about among all too many reporters and news outlets."

"For the record, all Mr. Trump did earlier this week was thank me for a letter I wrote defending him against attacks by Kzihr Khan and complimenting the campaign we’re running. He never said he endorsed me, nor did I expect that he would."

Some interesting comments on the latest Wisconsin poll, contribution numbers etc. Read it all:
