I believe it started in WWII. If a person was killed a Gold Star was hung in the window of the parents.

Gold Star parents are parents who lost a child in combat.

My grandparents had one, small rectangular banner about the size of 2-3 washcloths with a red & blue border and white background for the gold star.
They even had an organization back in those days called Gold Star Mothers. It was not just a mutual support group, but they wrote cards and put together care packages for other people in the service.
They didn't use it as a club to promote their personal politics and business interests.

It all started around WW1. It finally became an official government thing in 1947.

What is the meaning of Gold Star? During WW II families hung a Maroon banner with a Gold Star on it for each family member in service. Now I guess that it has morphed into meaning a death in combat.

Blue Star means you have family currently serving overseas. Gold Star means you have lost a family member.
It goes back to WWII.
