I no longer go down to South Walton but my Daughter who lives in Oklahoma rented a condo right on the beach a couple of years ago. I spent the week with them there.
I could not believe how crowded and expensive the area is now. They filmed “The Truman Show” down there in South Walton.
I worked at LaFountains Wharf in Destin while I was in high school. It was a sleepy little fishing village. Now a major resort.
It’s gone crazy all along the coast. Same in NC, except for long stretches of the Outer Banks. Those are wildlife reserves. But where houses, condos, and hotels can be built, they’re crammed in there.
I lived in Wilmington for a year and liked it ok. But I only went to the beach during off season. I don’t care a thing about swimming or sunbathing. I just enjoy sitting there listening to the surf sounds and feeling the breeze.
Destin is crazy. And just trying to get there can be a nightmare. Traffic is insane.
