14 dogs die after truck’s air conditioning unit fails

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) – Investigators in St. Joseph County are looking into the deaths of 14 dogs in South Bend for an American Kennel Club dog show, according to the South Bend Tribune.

The paper reported a box truck belonging to Lakesyde Kennels and Handling of Wellington, Ohio was parked at a hotel in Roseland. The truck’s owner had brought several dogs to the dog show and was keeping them in the truck with a functioning air conditioning unit. The truck was plugged into an outlet at the hotel to keep the unit running.

The operator of the truck, Cortney Corral, had arrived in the area Wednesday and had taken care of the dogs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. After Corral tended to the animals Friday she retreated to a hotel room for a nap of about two hours.

While she napped, a circuit breaker on the truck tripped which turned the air conditioning unit off. When Corral returned to the truck, she found the dogs had died.

The paper reported all of the dogs were golden retrievers except for one. Corral reportedly owned some of the dogs, but eight were owned by people not in South Bend for the show.

Police are trying to determine what on the truck would have caused the circuit to malfunction. Police also told the newspaper they’ve been unable to determine any criminal act or intent.

The St. Joe County Humane Society and law enforcement are continuing to investigate.

Sorry to report this, but a sad reminder as to what the heat we are having can do to our furry friends. Even when you think you are doing everything possible.

I'm more than sure these people are absolutely devastated by this.

I've got to wipe my monitor now. Damn thing is all blurry.

Any of Senator Jeff Flake’s relatives in the area?

My first suspects would be the other competitors at the show, especially any in direct competition for particular awards. I’m privy to some chat among competitive cat breeders, and some of the stories they have to tell are mind-blowing. People can and do poison, steal, harass, and otherwise interfere with others’ show animals in order to prevent them from beating their own animals in these competitions.

Oh, how awful.

Blurry monitor here as well, ... did you see the article stating that idiot John Kerry wants to eliminate air conditioning.

Years ago we used to haul tens of thousands of baby chicks from hatcheries to farms with no air conditioning in the truck.

In the hot summer we opened scoop vents all along the side to keep air flowing to the birds. If we broke down, we opened all the doors, windows, vents and often would remove some in the center to allow air in and heat to escape.

Once after a several hundred mile journey to Mexico to deliver chicks, there was no one there to greet us at the border. We got on the phone, they dispatched someone from a hundred miles away in Mexico to get the chicks. As it was very hot, in that time we drove around in circles mile after mile in a five acre circle till the trucks arrived. Our losses in birds was very low.

This is very tragic, but if the simpleton Sec. of State had his way, there wouldn't be any air conditioned vehicles virtually anywhere.

Assuming the report is accurate, I disagree. Stuff happens, and this looks like bad luck. Nothing more.

I knew an independent trucker who was hauling choice and prime beef carcasses from Liberal, Kansas to Eglin AFB, Florida.

He had a full load and a few hundred miles from Eglin his refer went out. When he got there they were just beginning to thaw.

If the Air Force had turned down the load, he would have been ruined as he would have been liable for the whole thing.

He told me he was sweating it out but they accepted them.

What a horrible way to die. Our temps hit 104 yesterday in Minnesota. Poor, poor pups. I love dogs and can’t imagine their suffering. Just bad.

Not to be too flippant, but I’m constantly on the prowl and lookout for hot chicks.

Tragic. But a reminder...when lives are at stake, do not rely wholly on modern electric/electronic technology.

A few years ago, a man had a heart attack while he was picking up some dry cleaning. An ambulance came and took him to the hospital directly. Unknown to anybody, his dog was in his car with the windows closed. It was a hot day. You can guess the outcome.

He only planned to be in the dry cleaners for a minute or two but you never know.

-—Idiot. Driver should suffer the same fate-—

So because a circuit breaker failed, the human should suffer the same fate...?

It’s not like he just left the dogs to die...

I’m surprised they did not have a fail-safe circuit which would have set off an alarm horn if the breaker tripped.
